January 1st, 2009 · No Comments

Lake Eildon national park is located to the north of the base of the highlands of Victoria, lying about 150 km to the north east of Melbourne. The Lake Eildon national park camping grounds are bordering the Lake Eildon. This is a protected area consisting of rough hilly regions, woodlands and thick forests.

The scenery at Lake Eildon camping grounds are simply superb. The wildlife and naturally formed historic landmarks are the greatest attractions along with facilities for recreation. A list of activities ranging from boating, skiing and fishing are available to to do here near the lake at the Lake Eildon camping grounds. Summers bring in loads of campers who come to have a wonderful time with friends and family while cooling off amidst natures bounty. A huge number of walking and nature trails are featured scattered all over the camping grounds. These trails take you through a variety of scenic situations involving the local wild birds and animals. Mountain biking and off road sports vehicle driving are a passion of many people who come to visit these camping grounds. Historical landmarks like abandoned gold mining ranches and the Merlo homestead which today lies submerged under the lake but becomes visible during the dry seasons are beautiful attractions at the Lake Eildon camping grounds. Be sure to make a note of the rules and regulations concerning the hunting of Sambar deer, especially during hunting season.

The facilities at certain regions of the Lake Eildon camping grounds can be reserved for a group of people by booking online at the official website of the Lake Eildon authorities. The Jerusalem Creek camping region has limited facilities at 70 sites with boats available for rent and kiosks situated in the proximity. While the more outward lying camping sites are also accessible,  most can be accessed by boat or by walk. The Fraser Store is another attraction scheduled to open in the last month of 2008. the Park authorities will be the management of the store which will supply necessities like ice, milk, beverages, eatables and bread. The income generated from sales by this store will be invested back into the park’s management system. This store is intended to be opened to cater to the masses of people who come to visit Lake Eildon camping grounds in the summer months.

The historical association of the Lake Eildon camping grounds with the aborigines who knew this place with the most personal knowledge began ever since their entry into these regions. The law and lay of the land along with knowledge about the local plants and animals were a knack of the local aborigines. The European settlers brought a sense of defeat and retreat to the local aborigines who were exploited. The Fraser national park was founded in the 50s of the 20th century along with the developing Lake Eildon which was first established in the 20s and later expanded in the 50s in order to cater to hydroelectric and farming requirements. The parkland that exists today was a collection of farm land owned by the European settlers.
