New York Camping
The state of New York in the U.S is home to more than 8000 campsites. The most popular time for camping in these areas is from Memorial Day to Labour Day. Camping is also done during the winter, fall and spring.
Some of the popular sites for New York Camping are as follows.
i) Allegany State Park- The Allegany State Park having an area of 65000 acres is famous for its unglaciated landscape, primitive forested valleys, wildlife and fall leaves. Divided into two areas, Quaker and the Red House, this state park has sand beaches, hiking trails, picnic areas, museums and naturalist walks. It also has 90 miles of snowmobile trails for the snowmobilers and more than 150 winterized cabins. Campers can also take part in other activities like bird watching, fishing, hunting, picnicking, snowshoeing, horseback riding and canoeing.
ii) Bowman Lake State Park- This state park is renowned as a ‘Camper’s Paradise’. The area has scenic roads winding through its evergreen hardwood forests to its shady campsites. A sandy lake front is present for the sunbathers and swimmers and the lake is well stocked with trouts. Around 103 species of birds are present in the park for the birdwatchers to spot. During the winters, campers can take part in cross country skiing and snowmobiling along the 8 miles of trails in the Bowman Lake State Park.
iii) Burnham Point State Park- The Burnham Point State Park is a quiet, small and lightly wooded campsite. Campers can take part in fishing, relaxing or boating to explore the islands, towns and historic sites up and down the beautiful river. Popular fish for fishing in the river include pike, bass, walleye and muskellunge. Along with trailer campsites and tents, this park also has playgrounds, boat docks and picnic areas.
iv) Cedar Island State Park- This state park covers half of the Cedar Island and is popular among the campers who love beautiful scenery, fishing and quite boating. The campsites of the park are lightly wooded and have a nearby picnic pavilion with an area of day-use.
v) Cayuga Lake State Park- The Cayuga Lake State Park has flat terrain at lakeshore where the sun lawns and beaches are present and these gently slope to cabins and campsites. The park’s highlight is the scenic view of the Cayuga Lake. The lake’s shallow water has bullhead, carp and largemouth bass and its deeper water has small mouth bass, northern pike, landlocked salmon, lake trout and various other fish. Also present in the park is a playground, boat launch and playing field.
vi) Chenango Valley State Park- This state park consists of two lakes, Chenango and Lily which were created after the retreat of the last glacier which left behind large chunks of ice. The Chenango Valley State park is also a nice place for camping. Here the birdwatchers can catch a glimpse of nut batches, woodpeckers, thrushes and warblers along its woodland trails and ducks, herons and kingfishers along its lakeside. This state park has 216 campsites for the campers to choose from. In winter, people can take part in sledding, cross-country skiing and ice skating in the park.
