If you are considering camping in Washington DC then it is advisable to chart your route according to the following parameters. First one to consider, is whether you are looking at something which is commercial or off beat. Then, make a call on what is your mode of transport. Some people prefer to take the metro to a place close to their camping site. Others prefer to drive. It might become cumbersome to hike the entire distance to the camp site. Having made these decisions, it is now time to zero in on the camp site. Here are some of the best camping grounds, in and around DC.
Greenbelt National Park
This is a National Park, situated inside the DC beltway. It is an oasis of greenery which is very close to the heart of DC, making it one of the most frequented Washington DC camping sites. It is easily accessible as it is very close to the Greenbelt Metro station and the hike to the camp site, from the station, is also not very long, though it maybe a little tiresome for children.
Pochik Bay Regional Park
It is a government run park, looked after by the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority. This is a gem of a place which has all the amenities of a modern day camping ground, without compromising on the natural beauty of the place. There is a seven days limit on the duration you can camp for here, and no alcohol is allowed in the park. The park is easily accessible by the metro. The Pochik Bay Park is one of the best places for camping in Washington DC.
Lake Fairfax Park
Another great place to go camping in Washington DC is the Lake Fairfax Park Campground. This is located to the west of DC in Virginia. Each site has a grill, picnic table, and a fire ring. The camp ground has camping areas which can accommodate small families, to large groups. Each spot has its own allotted parking area. You can also find bathhouse with sinks, hot showers and flushing toilets, which is a luxury to die for when you are out camping. There is a dump station with sanitary rinse-out.
Little Bennett Regional Park
This place is located north of DC, in the Maryland-National Capital Park. Little Bennett’s has around 91 campsites, which offer a tranquil and scenic camping location. The amenities available include a parking pad, picnic table and barbecue grill, for each camp site. The park is dotted with comfort stations equipped with sinks, showers, toilet facilities, and drinking fountains. The park is easily accessible from the city and is a lovely place to spend a weekend.
Cherry Hill Park
This place is very close to DC, and is one of the hotspots for camping in Washington DC. It is very well connected, and a great place to stay if one is looking for a cheap lodging option in DC. The Cherry Hill Park, more aptly is a RV park. It has all modern amenities to go with it, but peace, tranquility, and solitude in the lap of nature, is not what Cherry Hill Park is best known for. The park is well equipped and clean, and is a stone’s throw from the city. This also means that it is crowded and noisy and one needs to make bookings well in advance.
