Winter camping

Winter camping is primarily camping outdoors during the winters. Like all camping trips, winter camping has its ups and downs. It may however be a tad too dangerous than summer camping. When you go winter camping, it is necessary to plan adequately and also take the required precautions. Have no doubt regarding the fact that the effort put into planning the trip can make the difference between life and death, sometimes. Unlike any other form of camping, winter camping requires a certain level of experience and a few specialized equipments. Being aware of the hazards greatly reduces the level of risk to your life and also the lives of your fellow campers. Before you set out, it is advisable to read a good deal regarding your destination and also the route you intend to take to reach the place. The research should mainly cover topics like weather conditions and also to find out how, when and where the trip will work.

The first thing to look up is the route you shall be taking. If you are traveling in parts where there is snow, it is advisable to find out the gradient and also the intensity of the snowfall. Also find out about the quality of snow i.e. variable, breakable, powder, or packed. Based on this decide your mode of travel. Some places permit walking, snowshoeing, while others are good for skiing. Also find out about the changes in elevation along the trail. An uphill climb requires more time where as a downhill climb can be more hazardous and may require more equipments than the former.

It is also important to remember that everything takes almost twice the time during the winter; be it walking or pitching the tent or cooking the food. It is advisable to researching emergency plans and common methods to bail out, in case you are caught in a tricky situation. Most of this information will come from a thorough research and reading some handbooks on safety and security.

Next comes, what you need to pack for the winter camping trip. It is important to carry proper clothing. Given that you will be traveling in the winter, it is advisable to carry plenty of woolen clothing. But do not be under the impression that wool alone will suffice. You will come across a lot of water from the melting snow and hence the need for water proof garments as well. Also remember to carry adequate number of socks, mufflers and mittens. While winter camping, make sure you carry some extra pairs of clothing, as it takes woolen garments much longer to dry, in case they get wet. Also carry enough protective eye wear in order to protect yourself from the glare of the sun. The best fabrics to go for are Fleece or Pile. These synthetic materials made out of plastic contain the same insulating properties of wool and are also easy to keep dry. The design also allows them to be worn in many layers, providing better protection and insulation. However the wind resistance properties of these types of garments are very poor.
