About Hurd State Park

Visit Hurd State Park and enjoy scenic views of the Connecticut River while being surrounded by nature. The park is especially popular with small boat owners and is located just a few miles north of New Haven, Connecticut, south of Hartford. In the early 1990s, the state acquired what is now HURD Park as part of its commissioning program to acquire land for public use along the Connecticut River.

Over the years, the park has grown to almost 1,000 hectares, with a total of about 2,500 hectares available for public and private use.

Many boaters recognize the park by the distinctive rock fragments that rise above the trees. These granite outcrops, or crevices, are criss-crossed by veins of feldspar once mined on a large scale in Connecticut.

Shortly after the acquisition, Hurd became the subject of a legal battle to determine the ownership and privileges of the park's mining rights.

Fortunately, the resulting court decision benefited the state and prevented the possible desertification of 130 hectares of land. The park is named after the Hurd family, who came to Massachusetts from the Middle Haddam region in 1710 and settled on flat land on the banks of the river. In addition to the campsites, there is a boat camp in Selden River State Park for overnight guests traveling along the river, and the Department of Environmental Protection manages the campsites to help you enjoy your vacation.
