About Paugnut State Forest
The Paugnut state forest was established in 1929 when the state bought 1127 hectares, and the purchase included a viewing tower built by the American Brass Company. Some towers were found in the forest to help locate wildfires, but some of the towers disappeared as planes patrolled the skies to report fires.
The majority of the remaining forest was acquired in the 1930s and 1950s, and with a small increase recently, the total forest now stands at 1,646 hectares.
The Paugnut State Forest is used as a national park, UNESCO World Heritage Site and tourist attraction. It is in the northwestern tip of the town of Paulès, on the border between France and Germany, about 30 km south of Paris.
