Few natural formations are as impressive, inspiring and fascinating as caves, but the deep, dark recesses immediately evoke memories of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in upstate New York.

As they approached the cave, the thugs set their boats in motion and entered the yawning hollow, where the unfortunate pilgrims were robbed and feared worse. The cave was converted into a tavern and the tavern was called Cave - in - Rock.

The cave was home to a pair of killers who fled execution in Kentucky and continued their personal reign of theft and murder in Illinois. The cave served as a hideout and headquarters until they were killed. Some of the victims have lived their stories, but not all, and many others have not.

There is no electricity and there are no showers, toilets or landfills on these campsites. Each unit (60 feet long) can accommodate up to four people, with a maximum of three people per tent and one person per bed. Disabled parking is also available in the parking lot of the Cave in Rock State Park Visitor Center.

Firewood and barbecues can be grilled on any of the campsites as long as it is at least 50 feet from the entrance to the campsite.

The restaurant is known for its fine Mediterranean cuisine and offers many homemade specialties on the menu. On Sundays, there are roasted catfish, marinated chicken and a variety of other delicious dishes. As a full service restaurant, the opening hours are daily from 8 am to 9 pm and on weekends from 9 am to midnight.

The Ohio River offers excellent fishing, boating and water sports, and the pond is suitable for fishing.

There are five separate car parks with sufficient parking spaces for day visitors, and parking attendants can provide firewood if required. For group events, there are four large picnic shelters, three children's playgrounds, three picnic tables, a picnic table and picnic area, two picnic benches and three benches for playground children, and four large outdoor fire pits.

If you are coming from the Southeast, take I-24 West to Exit 16, over the I-24 bridge, then drive 38 miles east to Illinois Highway 146 and into the park. Drive west into Illinois State Park at the entrance to the Cave-in-Rock Ferry, cross the ferry and turn right onto the road at Exit 18.
