About Savage River State Forest

The Savage River State Forest is the largest forest park system in the state, covering 52,812 hectares. A strategic turning point in Garrett County, it preserves the natural beauty of the Savage River and its tributaries, as well as the scenic beauty and history of Savage County.

The forest is classified as northern deciduous forest, and about 2700 hectares of the forest have been designated as the largest game area. Maryland has no forests with more than 1,000 acres of wild land in a forest park system. Hiking maps for trails, including the Savage River Trail, which runs 1.5 km from the parking lot to the trail, are available at the park office.

For more information, visit the official website to learn more about the Savage River State Forest and its activities, as well as a list of other parks in the state park system.

All equipment and vehicles must be parked on designated camping sites or driveways and the number of pitches is limited. All campsites must be registered within the first hour of occupancy and all equipment, vehicles, tents, campers and other equipment must be left at the campsite.

If your party's equipment exceeds this amount, you must register at one of the two sites and unsubscribe from one of them.

Camping with backpacks is also allowed in the forest, but you must register on this page by filling in an envelope with the name of the persons in your group and paying for 10 nights in each place. Do not leave any traces on your campsite and try to take into account your use in order to minimize your impact on the soil and vegetation in an area.

The same restrictions as above apply to the number of people on the campsite, but campfires are allowed in most forest areas. However, the wildlife legislation prohibits the use of fireworks in forests to minimise the impact on sensitive or sensitive areas and the burning of firewood.

The guidelines for leaving out traces also apply when camping in wilderness areas while camping backpacks or out of the backpack. Before you build a campfire, you should definitely search the wild land borders, and the Leave no Trace policy also applies to camping in the wild, backpacking or back camping.
