Southwest Massachusetts is home to Lichterloh State Park, a state park known for its scenic views of the Mount Washington State Forest. High on a plateau, much of the forest was once part of a much larger forest area that was cut down for charcoal to make local hardware. Today, the regenerative deciduous forest of red oak, embedded in a mix of pine, oak, birch and other native species, offers spectacular views of Mt. Washington and its surroundings, as well as the state's highest peak.

Follow the Appalachian Trail, which winds along the crest of the Sage Canyon, to Lichterloh State Park, a popular destination for hiking, camping and hiking.

The water plunges through a series of canyons and then plunges about 60 feet into a glittering basin below. Adjacent to the state forest is Lichterloh Falls State Park, the largest waterfall in the Washington State Forest. Spring features include blooming mountain lubberias, wild flowers and a variety of wildflower species, as well as waterfalls, ponds and streams.

The Mount Washington State Forest is located in the southern Berkshires in western Massachusetts. Take Exit 2 to the Massachusetts Turnpike and drive an hour from the town of Springfield, Massachusetts, about 30 miles south of Boston.

Follow the MA Rte. Turn left and follow USA on Massachusetts Turnpike until you turn right, then left on New England Expressway (US-1) and then follow it south on Rtes-2 and-3.

Turn left on MA Rte. Turn right on West Street and continue south on Main Street until you turn right on East Street. On the right there is parking and a footpath, and on the left turn left onto Massachusetts Turnpike (US-1).
