About Burr Oak State Park

Burr Oak is one of Ohio's theme parks, offering scenic views of the Great Smoky Mountains and Ohio River, as well as a variety of scenic hiking trails. With its wooded hills, picturesque views and rustic charm, it has it all, from the beautiful forests to the picturesque waterfalls and views to its seclusion.

Burr Oak State Park embodies the wilderness character of Southeast Ohio, and Burr Oak combines modern conveniences with the wilderness spirit of Ohio.

Miles of wooded ridges and depressions encompass the foothills of the Appalachians, with a total of 2,000 acres of open space and 1,500 acres for hiking and camping.

The forest consists of numerous deciduous forests and is dominated by stately oaks and hickory trees. The forest is home to a variety of wildlife, including white-tailed deer, coyotes, elks, foxes, wildcats and other wildlife. Busy beavers and various waterfowl populate the shores of the lake, as do numerous birds of prey such as ducks, geese, turkeys and geckos.

The forest shows spectacular autumn colours as the leaves turn to a burnt orange, and the foliage of the oaks and hickory trees, as well as the trees and shrubs in the forest, is equally impressive.

Few mining towns are as notorious as the village of Santoy, but with the expansion of mining, the mining town has grown and flourished. Many colourful stories of life in Santoys have been told, and many of them tell the story of mining here over many years and its history.

True to the word, the story goes back to a gun battle that once took place at the beginning of the 20th century between the Santoy Mining Company and the Philippine National Police (PNP).

When the two participants met for a showdown, the road was not cleared and the ensuing altercation resulted in some men lying on the road and others being critically injured. The Old West came to life when a thief who rode a horse through the city stole a coal company's payroll.

These and countless other stories live on in Burur Oak State Park, as in other parts of the country.

A fire in 1924 destroyed the coal deposit and several shops, and in November 1931 19 of the remaining voters decided to leave the city. The loss was so great that only three years later a second mine shaft was shut down. Today, only the church, the first building in the city, reminds of a bygone era.

Burr Oak Lake was founded in 1950, and Burr Oak opened two years later as a state park and in 1953 as a city park.

A public beach offers bathing fun for sun-worshippers, but an indoor pool is only available for guests of the cottages. Burr Oak State Park and other state parks and city parks offer a variety of amenities, including picnic tables, changing rooms and toilets.

Five launch pads provide access to the lake from Burr Oak State Park and other state parks and city parks, and there are a number of picnic areas, picnic tables, a picnic area and a parking lot.

The picnic area is located in a picturesque part of the park and offers tables for barbecues, picnic tables, picnic chairs, a picnic table and other amenities.

Hiking trails of 20-20 km length, including part of the Buckeye Trail, lead hikers to picturesque views and unique rock outcrops. Backpackers will find a variety of different types of campsites as well as a number of picnic tables and picnic chairs. The 18 km long circular trail offers primitive campsites and drinking water at several points along the route.

The park also borders the Sunday Creek Wildlife Area, which consists of fifteen separate areas. The U.S. Forest Service operates the S.R.13 and also operates the Wildcat Hollow Backpack Trail, located at 58 Morgan County Road. This area is reached by an extensive route of the Buckeye Trail and a number of other trails in the park.

The U.S. Forest Service operates the S.R.13 and Wildcat Hollow Backpack Trail, as well as the Buckeye Trail and other trails.

State Route 78 between Glouster and McConnelsville deserves its name for its scenic views of Burur Oak State Park. This drain offers scenic views of State Park and its surroundings, as well as a short hike along the Buckeye Trail.
