About Penn Roosevelt State Park

Penn Roosevelt is a small park in central Penn County, Pennsylvania, surrounded by recreational visitors. The 41 hectare park is located in a remote area of the Seven Mountains region known as Stone Creek Kettle. Penn Roosevelt State Park is one of Pennsylvania's most sought-after recreational areas.

This summer, the Reichley Brothers, a wood-processing company, conducted a 39-mile Sunday trip with 210 passengers, most of them from Lewistown, on the 39-mile Sunday excursions. The journey started in Milroy and continued to Dickkopf and then up to Stone Creek Kettle, one of the hardest climbs in the park, which is about 1,000 feet above sea level. The steep, shaved slopes and hollows of this part of Penn Roosevelt State Park have been logged on a large scale for the railroad.

Attentive visitors can still find notes on the railway tracks from the late 19th century, many of which were later used by many railways as a base for the state forests. The land of the deforested land was sold to the Commonwealth in the 1920s to create most of the Rothrock State Forest.

Penn Roosevelt State Park has existed since the 1930s, when members of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) arrived to set up a labor camp at the height of the Great Depression. Stone Creek Kettle Camp was first known as Camp Penn Roosevelt, but in 1930 it was separated and the only camp separated from the other camps in State Park, and one of only two in Pennsylvania.

The body collectors lived in the camp and built recreational facilities, including a manger, which is now made of stone. Many of the surrounding forest paths and trails were also built, as was the main entrance to Penn Roosevelt State Park.

There are 18 more rustic campsites, some of which are equipped with tents only, but some are accessible on foot to ensure more privacy.

Because of its isolated location, Penn Roosevelt offers plenty of space to escape noise and electric light. Drinking water and flushing toilets are available, and refrigerators for food are stored in vehicles to deter wildlife. Park rangers patrol the park regularly and all camping fees are paid through a self-registration system.

The middle path cuts through the park and offers a wide range of trails, from hiking to mountain biking to cross-country skiing. Many of the trails pass through nearby state forests, and the 261-mile elevation route connects the national parks with the Pennsylvania State Park System, Penn State University, the University of Pennsylvania and other national parks.

The views are characterized by a series of paths that lead to a wide range of scenic views of the park and its surroundings. The paths lead from newly regenerated forests to older and older trees and from old and old trees to new ones.

The main path is through a blue-burnt rectangle on both sides of a white stripe. The sides of this strip are burned with blue - on rectangles of the same size, and the burned rectangle on the other side with red stripes on it.

The Mittelgebirgsweg is a rugged and challenging mountain peak trail, and guides are available at a number of points along the way. Aware of the difficulties and potential dangers, hikers take their own responsibility. Hikers staying at Penn Roosevelt State Park or parking their vehicles in the parks should sign up at Greenwood Furnace State Park and use the parking lot at the entrance to State Park, not the paths. Overnight stays are allowed, but hikers who want to stay like this must use a campsite and pay an overnight fee.

The picnic area is located on the west side of the lake, picnic tables and reservable picnic pavilions are available on the east side. For reservations, please call 888 - PA - PARKS for more information about the picnic areas and parking at Greenwood Furnace State Park or the parking lot.

Drinking water and toilets are available year-round, and for information about nearby attractions, please contact the Visitor Center at 888-PA-PARKS or the Greenwood Furnace State Park parking lot.

The park can be reached by turning off US 322 at Potters Mills, where the US322 changes from two to four lanes. It is located about half a mile north of Potter's Mills and a few miles south of the intersection of Route 322 and US-322, just before turning onto the eastbound road, where it changes lanes to two.
