About Tioga State Forest

Indian word means "confluence of two rivers" and is a reference to the Seneca Indians who once lived in the area. The Tioga State Forest, which consists of more than 2,500 square kilometers of forest, is named after them. It is the name of an area once inhabited by Senecas Indians, and of the Tioga River, a tributary of the Hudson River in the state of New York. Native American tribe, named after a tribe of Native Americans in the region that was formerly less than 0.5 km from the river.

The primary purpose of acquiring the state's woodland was to protect the Pine Creek spring water and the Hudson River and its tributary.

The first purchase took place in June 1900, when F. E. Watrous acquired 900 hectares of cedar wood. The acquisition continued over the years, and in 1955 the state's land holdings in the Tioga State Forest and Pine Creek watershed were transferred to the US Department of Agriculture.

These were called the resettlement countries and were located in and around the Armenian Mountains and near the source of the Tioga River.

The land that now forms Tioga State Forest originally belongs to the State of New York, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the State of Vermont. Work activities include the construction and maintenance of roads, roads and bridges, and a significant development of the forest is imminent.

At this time, the original mapping and timber typing began by the New York State Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Vermont State Forest Service (VTFS).

The CCC has also developed picnic areas and viewpoints, but the only remnant of this industry is the one that still exists in Morris. Another plant still in operation in the 1940s processed birch bark into birch oil and converted it into oil. Besides the birch tree business, there are also some interesting activities in the Tioga State Forest.

The area that includes the Tioga State Forest has always been essentially a timber production area, and the composition of the present forest is the result of logging and fire at that time. In the beginning there was the wood industry, which flourished for almost 50 years, but was not operated since 1972.

The Pine Creek Trail was developed by the Bureau of Forestry as an extension of an abandoned railway line that runs parallel to Pine Creek. The western edge of the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania is maintained by a 1.5 km long and 1,000 miles wide hiking trail. Many lookout points have been cleared to allow hikers a view of the pine stream and the valley.

The trail runs from Wellsboro Junction on the Jersey Shore to the Tiadaghton State Forest and through the state of New Jersey, from the Hudson River in the north to Wellsborough Junction in the south.

The route is mainly used for hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing and cycling, but there is a riding trail next to the cycle path on this section.
