About Fort Wetherill State Park

Fort Wetherill State Park is located on a granite cliff opposite Fort Adams State Park and is one of the most popular parks in New York State. The park offers a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, fishing and kayaking, as well as a number of hiking trails. Known for its scenic views of Lake Erie and the Great Smoky Mountains, it is the largest national park in North America, covering a total area of 1,000 hectares. This area is also a major attraction for divers, with facilities and boat ramps that are used throughout the year.

It was officially acquired by the State of Rhode Island in 1972 and covers 61.5 hectares. It was officially opened to the public on July 1, 1974.

In recent years, the region has seen a sharp increase in visitors as people from all over the world have discovered the natural beauty and unique coastline of the region. Fort Wetherill is known as one of the most popular tourist destinations in Rhode Island and the nation.

Fort Wetherill's spectacular location makes it a popular destination for visitors from around the country and the world.

The picturesque ruins have been a familiar sight for many years, but the United States founded the FortDumpling Group in the 19th century and the area became known as Dumplings Rock. The colonists built the battery to control the East Passage, and lost it to the British during the American Revolution and the occupation of Newport. When Fort Adams was built on the other side of the bay, the stone tower was partially erected and work was suspended for a time.

At the end of the 19th century, new protective structures for coastal ports were planned for the country and concrete cannons were poured onto the slope. In 1898, the fort was expanded as part of the Endicott system and named after an infantryman who died at the Battle of Fort Dumplings during the American Revolutionary War of 1776. The tower was blown up during the First World War in a battle between the US Army and the British and in 1898 the fortresses were renamed Fort Dumplings Rock and Fort Wetherill State Park.

The fortresses were reactivated during the Second World War and occupied by the 243rd Regiment. After the war ended in 1945, selected "German prisoners" participated in a political re-education program at Fort Dumplings Rock before going home to work in German law enforcement. The Wetherill family has been summer residents of Jamestown for many years, and 51 acres of land have been transferred to the state under a federal program to channel excess property for recreational use.

Since then, many visitors have enjoyed spectacular views and opportunities for diving, as well as a variety of other activities such as hiking, camping, fishing and hiking.
