About Fremont Indian State Park

Fremont Indian State Park was founded to preserve the history and culture of the Fremont Indians, a group of Indians in the San Francisco Bay Area. Visit the visitor center, where you can see a video program about strangers. The two paths of the park, one of which is accessible by wheelchair, lead through legends and history, illustrated by pictograms and petroglyphs.

Fishing, hiking, camping and picnics are available, and the park is located in the heart of the San Francisco Bay Area, just a few miles from the Golden Gate Bridge and BART Station.

The largest known Indian village in Fremont was discovered in 1983 during the construction of Interstate 70. The museum now displays restored artifacts, including the remains of the village, as well as artifacts and artifacts from other sites discovered during excavations. Visitors can wander through parkland leading to the San Francisco Bay Trail, the largest of its kind in the country.

The Fremont Indians were a group of farmers who lived in the San Francisco Bay Area from the mid-19th century until the early 1900s.

Clear Creek Canyon is located in the Sevier subdivision and 60 percent of the pottery comes from the Parowan subdivision. This is the subdivision into which Fremont is normally subdivided, and it is isolated in a vast area with a total area of about 1,500 hectares.

As a result, they had different livelihoods from others in the Fremont region, so they had to kill so many deer to survive, grow so much corn, collect seeds, and eat cattails, swamps, fish, and birds. They spent their free time making jewelry and objects for the trade, but needed time to get food, shelter and the necessary utensils.

There is no evidence that Paiute ever lived in Clear Creek Canyon, but they have played an important role in its history. There is a widely accepted theory about where the Fremontes came from and what happened to them in the 13th century AD.

The gorge and its tributaries were used for hunting and collecting seeds and pine nuts, and the dedication took place in the gorge, which was a sacred place due to its proximity to the Pahvant and Tuscher mountain ranges. The Clear Creek Canyon path is the only route that leads to and from the trail head at the foot of the mountain, the highest point on the west side of Clear Creek.

Ceremonial shrines were built in this gorge as part of their initiation process and because it was such a sacred place.

Some of the rock paintings in the park are attributed to the Paiuts, but also to some other tribes such as the Pahvant and the Indian ink.

In 1877, the first year that innkeepers came to Kanosh, a toll of 25 cents per car was levied for the use of the road for the next 25 years. The road was converted into a wagon road in 1881 to connect the settlement of Sevier Valley with Cove Fort.

Smiley and his wife Anna and their husband John built two vacation homes in the lower part of Clear Creek.

In 1890, six of Lott's children had a farm in the gorge, and in 1895 a school was built for his grandchildren. In 1896 the railway to Sevier was completed and a town with 1,000 inhabitants was founded. Gold was discovered and the only way to get to the gold reserves at the top of the railway line to Kimberly was Clear Creek Canyon. The canyon was built and gold was discovered, but the school had to be built until 1895.

In 1900, one of the Lott farms was sold, but the farm was marginal at best and most families had no work in the gorge. After I-70 was built in 1980, the family had to move and there was no new generation of families in Clear Creek Canyon. Follow the signs to the park and follow the trail head sign at the top of Clear Creek Canyon, north of Kimberly.
