About Grayson Highlands State Park

Grayson Highlands State Park was founded in 1965 and was originally called Mount Rogers State Park.

The park borders the Blue Ridge Mountains to the north, the Allegheny River and the Tennessee River to the south. Pets are not allowed on the grounds of the park, except for a small number of dogs and cats, and no horses or horses.

Grayson Highlands State Park was founded in 1965 and was originally called Mount Rogers State Park. The park has been supported by the community from the very beginning, from the funds earmarked for the purchase of the land to donations for exhibitions and a visitor center.

At that time, the park area was sparsely populated, people could live in the countryside, but most of their own needs were cultivated, collected and produced. Many areas of the parks are named after early settlers, and Massie Gap was named after Lee Massey, who lived in the gap himself. He lived for over a hundred years on a small property in Grayson Highlands State Park.

Wilburn Ridge is named after the famous hunter Wilburn Waters, and his reputation as a bear hunter and wolf catcher made him famous in the region.

These cool mountain streams offer anglers breathtaking landscapes to fish for native streams and wild rainbow trout. Several streams in the park have been designated as special streams for trout, which require the use of a single hook and no artificial bait. Trout under nine centimetres in length must be released unharmed, and fishing in this park is subject to a state fishing permit.

National forest permits are required for fishing in national forests and some areas are marked with signs. The 3.5-mile-long fishable water offers a variety of trout species as well as a range of other fish species.

Wilburn Branch in the central part of the park has 1.8 miles of fishable water and is designated as a special wild trout stream according to the rules. The creek can be accessed from Stamper Branch or Upchurch Road, and the creek is accessible via a 1.5 km trail on the south side of the road. At this point the stream is called the "crew trout stream" and requires a trout license in addition to a state fishing license.

In the southeast corner of the park there is a special wild trout stream with fishable water of 1.8 miles. The special arrangements also concern a 1-mile long stream with a maximum depth of 2.5 metres and a minimum length of 3 metres.

The Quebec branch in the northern part of the park has a special wild trout stream, but the waterway sometimes has low water. Access to a part of this stream is via a left turn from the SR 742 (Mill Creek Rd). You can do this by taking Highway 58 East to the park entrance and turning left onto SR-742 Mill Creek Rd.

Cabin Creek in the western part of the park has 2.1 miles of fishable water, and the water is populated by wild rainbow trout and native brown trout. To get there, take the Cabin Creek Trail through Massie Gap and reach the mouth of the Creek at the end. The stock is a mixture of wild trout, rainbow trout, brown trout, black, white, yellow and red trout and there are some stocks of both.

The picnic area is located in a converted farmhouse, and picnic facilities include drinking water, barbecue and toilets, as well as picnic tables, picnic chairs, picnic table and picnic benches.

The picnic huts can be reached by calling 1-800-933-PARK (8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) or by e-mail at park @ park.org. There are two apartments in the park, which are available for rent for $1,000 per month for a one, two and bathroom apartment and $2,500 for an all-inclusive apartment.
