About Plumas Eureka State Park

Eureka State Park Plumas was founded in 1959 and offers visitors a unique view of the historic mining town of Plumas and its surroundings. The museum building and the surrounding historical environment form the centre of the park. Originally built as a miners "bunker, the museum now serves as a visitor centre.

Outside the museum, there is a historic mining area depicting life during the California Gold Rush, and throughout the park, there are exhibitions on natural and cultural history. In summer, teachers and park staff tour the building and show blacksmithing demonstrations. Visitors can also enjoy fishing, nature experiences and hiking in the parks.

What began as a single discovery eventually led to 62 miles of shafts with several individual operators and companies. The event that led the community and later became the main reason for the establishment of the park was the discovery of gold on the summit of Eureka, which was then called Goldberg.

British mining experts perfected a method to extract the rich ore from the mountain, and three stamp mills were once in operation at various points on the mountainside. At that time, one of the mills, Mohawk, was concentrating on ore mining, and suddenly three stamps and a mill were put into operation on various mountainsides. Built in 1876 for $50,000, the Mohawks were the largest stamp factory in the United States and the second largest in North America. They included more than 1,500 stamp machines, each weighing between 600 and 950 pounds.

Two gravity trams brought ore from high shafts to the mountain, and the stamps could be crushed in 24 hours. The returning Erbueger miners sometimes carried the miners into the mountains and served as a base for the construction of the new Mohawk stamp mill on the other side. Plumas also offers rich fishing, with Jamison Creek flowing through the park, as well as other streams and rivers.

In general, the late spring and early summer is the best time to fish, but evening fishing in summer can occasionally produce fish.

Lake Madora is home to rainbow and brown trout, while Lake Eureka is home to only brown trout.

Jamison Creek is home to rainbow trout with a few brook fish, but not much in the way of trout.

It borders numerous other alpine lakes and streams, where various fish species, including gold trout, as well as some brown trout, can be found.

Pluma's Eureka and its surroundings are a hiking paradise, and day-trippers can park in the park to access a variety of trails that run through the recreation area and seaside resort, including the Pacific Crest Trail. Campers can leave their tents at any time of day or night and have access to a wide range of hiking trails and trails for hiking, biking, camping and fishing.
