About Humboldt Lagoons State Park

The experiment with different plant species proved to be economical and along the coast of Stone Lagoon several dairy farms were founded. Early farmers drained the dry lagoons, but when the highway was expanded, the lagoon was home to a motel and restaurant called the Little Red Hen, and several more years later.

The business continued until 1979, but the restaurant building was converted into a museum and park office and is now a visitor center and bookstore on the Humboldt Lagoon. Today, the wetland habitat has returned and offers a variety of bird species, fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds of prey and other wildlife.

The park offers boat rides, fishing, combing and hiking on the beach, but there is only one picnic area, so bring your own boat or explore the lagoon yourself.

There is also a three mile coastal path, and the beach can be inhabited with a beach house, picnic area and picnic tables, as well as a playground.

Summer is misty, cool and humid, but spring and autumn are lovely, and autumn and winter are warm, sunny and warm.

Point State Park is isolated from the power of the Pacific Ocean, but the lagoon's swampy habitat is the rest.

Hikers and fishermen enjoy the lonely beauty of the sandbanks and wetlands, but the park is much more than marshland. It consists of a series of sand dunes, sandbanks, swamps and small islands in the lagoon and ocean.

Gold miners swarmed in 1849 when a discovery was made in the Klamath and Trinity rivers. Gold miners tried to extract sand chips from the Big Stone Lagoons, but after considerable efforts, they succeeded in extracting very little gold. Sitka spruce thrive on the north and southwest banks, redwoods on both sides of the lagoon.

The Dry Lagoon State Park was founded in 1931 and over the next half century the park expanded to 1,000 hectares and added a few more lagoons. In 1981 the park was renamed Humboldt Lagoons State Park and in 1983 it was renamed Humbert - Lagaons State Park.

The park was expanded in the late 1970s and early 1980s as part of the Humboldt-Humbert-Lagune-Nationalpark conservation program by the Save the Redwoods League.

Walking on Big Lagoon Beach means keeping an eye on the tides and consulting the local tidal list. Several times in winter waves break through the barrier beach at the Grand Lagoon and the beach is temporarily impassable. At other times of the year, at low tide, it is best to go to the beach of Biglagoon, which means keeping your eyes open to the tides.

Nearby is an excellent environmental campsite on a wooded slope, and from the parking lot follow the beach to the south. Drive one mile and turn left at the State Park Road sign and follow south to Big Lagoon Beach, about one mile south of the park entrance.

The northern end of the Big Lagoon can be reached from the parking lot on the south side of State Park Road, about one mile south of the park entrance. You can walk or cycle to the beach, which is dotted with picnic tables, picnic benches and a picnic area with benches and tables.

Two miles further on, you can see a few deep spots on the sandbar, which are covered by waves at very high tide. Three miles further, from the south side of State Park Road and the beach, you have a good view of the Big Lagoon.

On the east side, the wind is growing and growing - carved redwoods of Big Lagoon State Park, and on the south bank, where Big Lagoon County Park is located. If you want to extend your walk a little, you can return along the same path, but rest on one of the driftwood logs along the beach.
