About Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park

Cheatham Grove is an extraordinary population of coastal redwoods, and the redwoods in the Grizzly Creek area inspired the idea of preserving the place forever.

The Van Duzen River flows next to the campsite and the park is just a short walk from the main parking lot of Grizzly Creek State Park.

Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park is large enough to give a sense of seclusion, but it is only a few acres in size and receives so few visitors that it can only be visited on weekdays and weekends.

Grizzly Creek is one of the largest redwoods in California and, at nearly 30 miles, also the furthest from the coast. Grizzly Creek is home to some of the most beautiful sequoia in California, as well as many other tree species.

The park is located in the Van Duzen River Valley, where Grizzly Creek meets the Van Duze River. This means that few visitors explore the park without visiting one of the six short trails, which range from a few hundred feet to more than a mile.

The park is located on a remote side road that connects Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park with the rest of the park and winds through the woods between Highway 101 and Interstate 5. This small street has been the main thoroughfare between San Francisco and Eureka since 1918, after the completion of 101. The road is so remote that it is hard to imagine that this place could be remote, but filmmaker George Lucas found himself in one of the pristine redwoods that serve as the backdrop for his Star Wars film.

A short circuit leads to a grove where there are six wonderful environmental campsites, and educational trails interpret the native flora. The park is lined with a variety of tree species, including Grizzly Creek Grown Redwoods and Sequoia Grove. Another worth visiting is this collection of pristine sequoias located just a few miles north of the park's main entrance on Highway 101 and Interstate 5.

This summer, low water levels allowed the construction of a pedestrian bridge over the Van Duzen.

The bridge provides access to a 1.25-mile memorial trail that winds through the forest, and hikers have a good view of the river and park from the Arch of the Devil's Circle above it.
