About Humboldt Redwoods State Park

Humboldt Redwoods State Park comprises an environment unparalleled anywhere in the world. It is California's third largest state park and is protected by more than 17,000 acres of pristine old mammoth wood, one of the most pristine ancient redwoods on the coast. Built in 1921 as a small Bolling Memorial Grove, the park has grown over the years into a diverse ecosystem that includes the largest remaining old red tree forest in California and the second largest in North America.

Hiking, cycling and horseback riding are 100 km of hiking trails to explore, and a variety of activities and facilities are available. In the park there are more than 1,000 kilometers of hiking trails and a wide range of outdoor recreational opportunities for all ages.

The South Fork of the Eel River offers fishing, boating and swimming, and there are many areas you can use to simply enjoy the pristine surroundings. The Visitor Centre offers a variety of fun and educational exhibits and activities, including hiking, cycling, canoeing, kayaking, mountain biking and other leisure activities. Popular locations include Giant's Grove, Redwood Grove State Park Trail and East River Trail. Brochures and car tours are available at the end of Avenue of Giants near the visitor center.

To plan your trip better, check the links on the left of the screen for more information on hiking, biking, fishing, kayaking, mountain biking and other activities. During the summer season, nature walks are offered daily through Redwood Grove State Park Nature Center and the Humboldt River Trail.

Redwood Grove State Park Nature Center and Humboldt River Trail are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In summer, there is often morning fog, which usually settles before noon, so visitors should be prepared for the weather. Rain during the summer season is unusual and occurs in the early morning and late evening hours. The park receives 60 to 80 cm of rain a year, the vast majority of which falls between October and May.

Summer temperatures can vary widely, so multi-layer clothing is recommended for all seasons. Snow in winter is unusual and occurs in the early morning and late evening hours of the summer season, usually in late summer and early autumn.
