About Lory State Park

Hiking trails lead through Lory State Park, and backcountry camps are available for visitors looking for a quiet getaway in the Fort Collins suburbs. There are a variety of hiking trails and you can enjoy mountain biking, hiking and horse riding in the mountains of the Colorado Rockies and on the trails of Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. With gentle valleys and mountainous slopes, the 12 percent incline rarely exceeds 2.5 miles per hour.

A footpath on the east side of Lory provides access to a bay in the Bay of Horsetooth Reservoir.

Canoeists, kayakers and rafters can start their boats at the Bay of Horsetooth Reservoir on the east side of Lory State Park. Motorboaters can also start their boat at the northern end of the bay, south of Lake Hoursetooth. Boaters and road users can register for boats, trucks or snowmobiles in the Lories car park next to the park entrance. Guests can take a motorboat ride from the entrance of the lake to Lori Lake for $5 per person or $10 per vehicle.

The park is located on the east side of State Park, about 30 miles north of Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Lories are covered by a thick layer of Permian sedimentary rock from Pennsylvania, two-thirds of which are exposed. The sediment formations uncovered include a large part of Precambrian granite and schist, creating a pattern on both the east and front sides.

The reservoir also contains conglomerate sandstones, such as the Santanka Formation. The stream is dug into the sedimentary rock and forms a steep gorge that flows into a mountain outflow.

Sedimentary rocks were uncovered, including the formation of red limestone and the Ingleside Formation, as well as a large portion of Permian granite.

The metasedimentary rocks are located in east-west oriented bands, which run parallel to each other in the park. Pegmatite is located on the southern border of Central Park, and tonalite was located near the granodiorite band near Boulder Creek, the source of the creek and its tributary Soldier Creek. Deposits are visible well below the formation of Soldier Creek, as well as a large amount of sandstone.

The almost infertile rocky outcrops and cliffs are supported by lichens and mosses and ecologically dominated by a variety of plants and animals, such as wildflowers, birds, reptiles, mammals, amphibians, insects, fungi, grasses and other plants.

The predominant forest trees are affected by a variety of species, such as pines, oaks, birches, pines, oaks, elms, sequoias, maples and oaks. The undergrowth species include grasses, shrubs, ferns, blackberries, clover, cedars, hickory, spruce, hazelnuts, pecans and other species.

Most of the lower park heights are dominated by meadows dominated by grasses, shrubs, ferns, blackberries, clover and other undergrowth species. The bushland is covered with a variety of shrubs such as pine, birch, oak, elm, redwood and maple. The most common shrub species are mammoth, oak, pine, birch, hickory, spruce, cedar, hazelnut, pecan and blackberry.

There are a variety of floodplains with drainage channels and seepage springs, some of which support rare forest lilies. Over 175 species of migratory and domestic birds are known, including birds of prey, waterfowl and waterside birds attracted by waterfalls, streams, ponds, lakes, rivers and other bodies of water. The broad-tailed hummingbird, the bluebearer and many other species are striking birds, as are birds such as owls, falcons, eagles, sparrows, geese, ducks, seagulls and others.

The striped skunk and wild boar as well as the white-tailed deer are frequent attractions and occur in other parts of the park.
