About Holts Landing State Park

Holts Landing is a state park in the US state of New York and covers 203 hectares of land. Historically, the coast and inland bays were home to the Indians, who harvested seafood and hunted the surrounding swamps and forests. With the arrival of the European settlers, agriculture along the small bay slowly developed into agriculture in and around the smaller bay.

The Holt family maintained a farm and a boat pier at this location until 1957, when the property was sold to the State Road Administration. In 1965, the first of the properties was transferred to the State Park Commission, and in 2001 a stable and jetty was opened overlooking the shallow bay so that crabs and anglers alike can fish. The land itself is the only pier in Delaware Inland Bay built specifically for crabs, and it is one of only a handful of piers in the entire state of New York. This property, now called Holts Landing State Park, has a long history as a small family business.

The pier is open daily from 8 am to sunset, the pier from 9 am to 5 pm, with an open day from 10 am to 4 pm and from 6 pm to 9 pm.

Today, the Delaware Division of Parks and Recreation offers a surprising variety of recreational activities in this small park on the shores of the lake. Picnics are among the more popular activities, as are fishing, boating, kayaking, canoeing, hiking and other outdoor activities.

Children will enjoy the new playground and picnic area, and those who bring poles and horseshoes can enjoy throwing. Picnic tables and barbecues are set up under shady trees throughout the park, or you can reserve a picnic pavilion with built-in grill. A large sunbathing area with a view of the bay invites visitors to spread out picnic blankets. Visitors can also enjoy the peaceful surroundings of this park by taking a quiet stroll along the coast or in the fields.

Several old pits used by a road maintenance company have been converted into small ponds in the forest, creating a natural habitat for a variety of birds, reptiles and amphibians, as well as wildlife.

Attentive hikers can spot deer, raccoons, opossums, muskrats and foxes and see animal footprints on the sandy ground. Songbirds settle in and around forest trees and shrubs, and birds of prey such as owls, hawks, eagles, owls and even butterflies are common in the area. Holt's landing is a well-kept secret, but it holds many pleasant surprises.

The nearby Assawoman Canal is also part of Holts Landing State Park, and the canal was originally dug by hand - by immigrants in the 1890s.

Although the water is very shallow today, the canal was operated as part of the national inland waterway system until the 1950s and it is still operating as a private marina, although the water is much shallower today. Currently it operates a leased portion of it, but services in the marinas include fishing, boating, kayaking, canoeing, paddling and other activities for adults and children.

The Parks and Recreation Office is currently planning to develop additional recreational facilities in the area in collaboration with private property owners and to develop new ways and means of leisure.

Of course, the most popular attraction at Holts Landing is Indian River Bay, but on a clear day visitors to the park have access to a variety of outdoor activities including kayaking, canoeing, hiking, fishing and boating.

The boat mooring also offers easy access to hiking boats and the central location of the park makes it a great place for windsurfing on board, as well as kayaking, canoeing and fishing.

The shallow bay is also perfect for climbing, and lucky anglers can fish flounder, redfish and sea trout. Fishing in the bay is a fun activity from boat to coast, but it is also a great place for kayaking, canoeing and hiking.
