It's a moody place, Biscayne National Park, but it's also one of the most beautiful places in South Florida and a great place to go hiking.

During the day, the shallow waters of Biscayne Bay are a glassy, smooth window on the world around you. The day is calm and still, and the silence is interrupted only by waves sloshing over the forest - covered ground as manatees exhale, crabs sink into leaves, white waves bite at the teeth of an angry sky. At the weekend, I went on a day trip to release the water for snorkeling, but the wind created a calm, calm sea with no wind, no waves, just the sound of my own breathing.

Zooming in from the boat on the water and the reefs is like flying in the air, but during the day they are so smooth that no details are visible at the bottom, and when snorkelling the sound of your own breathing echoes in your ears.

The temperamental nature of the place is reflected in the colours of the water, the wind and the waves that surround you and then behave on a stormy day when it is milky.

The nearest major airport is Miami-Dade County International Airport, which is located just a few miles from Biscayne National Park. It is located on the west side of the park, south of Miami Beach and north of Fort Lauderdale - Miami International.
