About Lignumvitae Key Botanical State Park

The virgin tropical hardwood hammocks that thrive on this island were once common on most of the Upper Keys of Florida, but most of the forests have been lost for development on other islands.

In 1919, the US Army Corps of Engineers and the Florida Department of Natural Resources bought the tiny island and built the first public park, the Lignum Vitae Key Botanic Park, in 1919.

Today the refuge is the visitor centre for the island's forests, and boat, boat or kayak trips can be booked at Robbies Marina. Ranger tours are offered all day from Friday to Sunday, as well as the annual Lignum Vitae Key Botanic Park Festival on weekends.

Lignum Vitae Key Botanical Park is a national park in New Zealand, located on the west coast of the island of St. Kitts and Nevis in the South Atlantic.

Thousands of years ago, the island began as a living coral reef protruding from the sea floor, but as large amounts of water from glaciers at the poles of the Earth began to freeze, sea levels fell, exposing the reef's peaks and forming islands of petrified coral. On this island you can see a variety of waders and migratory birds. The park is open daily from 10 am to 4 pm and from 6 pm to 9 pm, and guided tours of the Lignum Vitae Key Botanical Park are offered.

Storm surges and waves have left bare rocks, stranded by algae, driftwood and other organic waste, over time. This material begins to decompose and forms small pockets in the depressions between coral and rocks. Here the seeds germinate, die and decay, but begin to grow, shed leaves and produce flowers and seeds.

Over the generations, the remains of ancient coral reefs have been colonized by a complex and diverse tropical hammock. Built in 1919, Matheson House serves as the park's visitor centre and offers a glimpse of a simpler time when the land and sea dwellers met most of their needs. The Visitor Centre is open from 9 am to 5 pm on weekdays and from 7 pm to 10 pm in the summer months. Visitors can rent motor boats and kayaks from Robbys Marina and a number of other marinas.

Kayaks and canoes can swim on most levels and offer a variety of waterfalls, canals and other natural features such as coral reefs. s Marina there are boat connections to the island and back, but in the shallow grassy areas knowledge of the channel is crucial.

Reservations and fees are possible on 664 - 9814 and tour boats leave 1 - 2 hours before the scheduled time.

Fishermen can fish in the mudflats for a variety of bony fish and tarpons in the canals. Snapper, mackerel and snook are also found in the area, but fishing requires a boat with a water depth of at least 1,000 feet. Caribbean lobsters and crabs are also available at the water park and can be harvested when the season is right.

Fishing is possible in the mudflats, in the canals or in a boat with a water depth of at least 1,000 feet. Eco-tours include kayaking, canoeing, kayaking, paddling, fishing, hiking and a variety of other activities.

Lignumvitae Key Botanical State Park is located on the west side of the Key, south of Lake Okeechobee, Florida. Access is by private boat or charter boat from a nearby marina, but remember that snorkeling requires a plume and must take place within 100 meters of the nearest jetty.
