About Silver Springs State Park

There is clear, bubbling water that sparkles silver on a sunny day, and even on extremely cold days the pool does not freeze. Visitors marvel at the adjacent watercress bed, but even in the coldest winter it is still warm enough to swim in.

The Fox River flows through this picturesque area, which also contains several small artificial lakes.

The majestic oak meadows offer visitors a panorama of natural beauty, and picnics, fishing and hiking are popular summer activities. A natural prairie restoration project provides visitors with access to some of the state's most scenic areas, as well as a variety of waterfalls and other natural features. For winter sports enthusiasts, ice skating, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling are available.

Silver Springs is the perfect place to relax, practice sports or just enjoy the outdoors, with a variety of outdoor activities including hiking, biking, camping and fishing.

This 45 hectare prairie area allows visitors to see the landscape that once dominated before settlers tamed the land. It is ideal for visitors who want to "experience" the history of Silver Springs State Park and its history as a tourist destination.

The 1,250-acre site was purchased by the state of Illinois in 1969, and in 1980 a 30-acre prairie project began, which continued its development. In 1991, another 15 hectares were added and in 2000 a further 100 hectares. It is located on the west side of Silver Springs State Park, north of the park entrance.

For those who like a rustic, unspoilt environment, there is an area overlooking the Fox River, and vehicles are not allowed on the campsite, so travel a short distance with a backpack. In this densely wooded area, campers are surrounded only by the sounds of nature.

If you want to feel the spray of water on your face, take a canoe and enjoy a ride on the Fox River. Boating is not allowed in Silver Springs State Park, so if you just wanted to relax in the water, you can.

Gasoline engines are not permitted in Silver Springs State Park or in other US states, Canada or Australia.

There are no restrictions for engines, but small engines are recommended for shallow water areas. If you like motorized rides on the water, the Fox River is an excellent choice, but there are restrictions on motors in some areas of the park.

If you want a shelter, there are three in the parking lot, and all are conveniently located. Take a picnic basket to the picnic area on the south side of the park for a quick picnic or to take picnic baskets with you.

At East Loon Lake, there is a snack bar to help you finish your picnic and offer light snacks and soft drinks. If exercise and nature studies are your goal, go for a walk or a bike ride in the forest area overlooking the lake. For those who prefer a ride, there are a number of hiking trails in the wildlife management area, some of which are available during the hunting season, as well as a picnic area.
