About Hillsborough River State Park

Hillsborough River State Park, Florida's first national park, was opened in 1938 as one of the first parks in Florida. The park is divided into two sections, one on the west side and the other along the fast-flowing Hillsboro River. While the park area is located directly across the river, the main entrance and parking lot and visitor center are located at the southern end of a short walk from the entrance.

The river offers opportunities for fishing, canoeing and kayaking, and tours of the fortress are offered with weekend reservations. Canoes can be rented from the park concessions, which also provide food, drink, picnic supplies and souvenirs. A canoe or kayak ride along the river is available, as is a guided tour of Fort Hillsboro, the fort's historic fortress.

On four nature trails hikers can hike up to seven kilometers, and wetland restoration trails are suitable for cyclists and hikers. Weather permitting, visitors can take a walk along the river or go canoeing or kayaking through Fort Hillsboro State Park.

The park offers campsites for youth and groups, and primitive campsites are accessible via footpaths. Reservations are recommended for campers between 18 and 64 years of age and for adults over 65 years of age.

The hotel is located on the top of the hill, a few hundred meters from the main entrance of the park. A variety of paths, including a 1000-foot path to the estuary and a 3-mile path along the bank, allow visitors to observe diverse plant and animal communities. Bring binoculars for people to see the wildlife for the best view.

Hillsborough River State Park is part of the New Deal-inspired Florida State Park System. In 1933, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) became the first "New Deal" agency in Florida, and between 1933 and 1942, the C CC and the Works Progress Administration (EPA) built an impressive collection of facilities throughout Florida. Visit the Ranger Station for more information about the animals identified that were seen in Hillsborough River State Park.

The CCC began work in Hillsborough River State Park in 1934, when the company was relocated from Sebring in 1418. The park officially became part of the Florida State Park System in 1935 and construction began in 1984 on the park's new visitor center, the first of its kind in the United States.

The SP-71 CCC Camp served primarily as a forestry unit, erecting fire towers, planting seedlings and erecting fire barriers in Hillsborough County. In 1934 and 1936 the first of the two fire stations of the park, a fire station and a campground, were built. The National Park was completed in July 1938, when Camp SP / 71 in Sulphur Springs was evacuated. A delegation of 60 CCCC staff was sent to develop Hillsboro River State Park under the supervision of a National Park Service.

In 1935 and 1938 the recreational facilities of the park, including 5 overnight cottages (later dismantled), as well as several picnic huts and boathouses were built. In addition to the campground and the fire station, other wooden and stone houses were built by park staff in the 1930s and 1940s. The park covered a total of 3,383 hectares and covered an area of 2.8 square kilometres, with a flooded area in the middle with an average annual rainfall of around 4,500 litres of water.

Electricity for camping and camping is available at most campsites, with 108 pitches on each campsite. Each place is equipped with water, fireplaces and picnic tables, and all campsites have a sewage station, although not all have a sewage connection.

At concession outlets throughout the park, you can buy basic food and goods, and pets are allowed without restrictions. Swimming is possible in the man-made swimming area at the foot of the hill, as well as on the banks of the river. There are exhibits in all parks, but no exhibits in Hillboree River State Park, except a few small ones.

The park offers many planned activities throughout the year, such as hiking, camping, fishing, canoeing, kayaking and other outdoor activities.

The primitive camps along the river are accessible by footpaths, but reservations are recommended. For more information about camping in the park, click on the link below to reserve of America. You can see a map of each campsite by clicking on a parking map and selecting one of the links shown there. Select the icon to see a detailed description of your campsite and its facilities.

Youth campsites can accommodate groups of up to 60 people at a time, and some youth campsites can accommodate groups of 30 to 50 people or groups of up to 10 people each.

The park also offers seasonal swimming in the man-made pool at Hillboree River State Park. The swimming fee is $1 per person per day for people 6 years and older and $2 for children under 5 years old, which is free. All fees are paid at the entrance of the pool, but the park does not offer seasonal swimming in summer due to the high cost of artificial pools in other states.

Canoeing is a popular activity in the park, and visitors can bring their own canoe or rent one within the park. For seasonal availability and dates, please visit Ranger Station for information on canoeing and other outdoor activities in Hillboree River State Park.

Pets are welcome in all outdoor areas of the park, but visitors should always keep their pets on a leash. Farm animals are also welcome in any area of the park, as long as they are not in direct contact with humans or animals.

Hillsborough River State Park is also a great place to camp with your pets as it is one of the most popular campsites in the state.

Quiet times must be observed from 23: 00 to 08: 30 and pets must always be kept to themselves. Pets that are left tied up or unattended for more than 30 minutes are not allowed in the park or in any part of the campsite.

Florida law requires that all pets be vaccinated against rabies, and their owners must collect their pets and return them to the park within 24 hours.

Animals that are noisy, dangerous, intimidating or destructive must not stay in the park and must be locked up or locked away.
