About Colt Creek State Park

The 5067 hectare park, purchased by the Overstreet family in May 2006, is located in the Green Swamp Wilderness Area and is named after one of the tributaries that flow through the property and opened to the public on January 20, 2007. It is a piece of unspoilt wilderness, consisting mainly of a stream, a small stream and a few small streams, as well as a few small ponds. The property has been managed as a cattle ranch by the Over Street family for over 60 years, but previous activities in the countryside included hunting, fishing, camping, horseback riding, hiking, canoeing, mountain biking and horseback riding. The park's website even has a "Sherman" with a map and information about the area.

Visitors are invited to fish in the creek and explore the more than 12 miles of hiking trails. The park is currently equipped with a range of outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, fishing, canoeing, mountain biking and horseback riding, as well as fishing.

At the information desk you can take binoculars and also get a checklist of birds and butterflies for download. At the end of each year's survey, volunteers document the number of butterflies, birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians in the park and other wildlife.

You never know what you're going to see in Colt Creek State Park, but you can fish freshwater at three different lakes in the park. The lakes are between 2 and 25 hectares in size and range from 12 to 70 feet deep. They were excavated in 1990 as part of a limestone mining project and cover an area of 1.5 to 2.2 hectares.

Canoes, kayaks and small Jon boats can be carried into the water and started by hand, but gas engines are not allowed, as are electric motors. You can catch small fish that are only 1.5 to 3 feet long, and catch up to 10 to 20 fish per hour. Larger fish must have survived unscathed, so anglers in each of the three lakes can keep a maximum of two fish and at least three per day.

For persons under 15 years of age, a fishing permit is required, for adults over 65 years, a fishing permit or fishing permit.

In the park, cycling is allowed, with a single-lane cycle path that is in the development phase.

Mountain bikes are recommended in the soft sand, but there is no recommended mountain bike on soft sand and no bicycle parking.

Visitors can walk or ride along a marked trail that winds through several nature areas of the park, including the stream, the creek bed and the creek valley and the river valley. Part of this path leads to the edge of a pasture, which also offers picturesque views.

Sometimes visitors catch a glimpse of birds, reptiles, amphibians, birds of prey and other wildlife in the valley.

The park is located at the intersection of US 98 and State Road 471 on the west side of the park. Take Exit 32 at 4, travel north on US 1998 for approximately 13 miles, turn right on State Route 4 71, stay on marked roads, turn left on State Route 472, then right again on Interstate 75. Take Exit 301 at 75, Exit 301 at East Side and Exit 32 to 4. When you enter the parks, you can carry a hiking map with you, which you can take with you on your way into or out of the city.

The park entrance is located at the intersection of US 98 and State Road 471 on the west side of the park, south of State Route 472.
