About Brown County State Park

Among the things that make Brown County State Park popular year-round are the interpreting services, beautiful scenery and scenic views of the Great Smoky Mountains. Located in the heart of the Sierra Nevada, north of Los Angeles, visitors to the large Native American National Park, which includes the largest of its kind in North America, will particularly enjoy the national park nestled between the mountains of New Mexico, California, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada and Utah.

Abe Martin Lodge is a reminder of the intercounty connection and has become a flashpoint for the State Park, which includes the Brown County area and the State Park itself.

Hubbard was born in Bellefontaine, Ohio, but settled in Indianapolis, where he took on the role of Abe Martin in 1904. At first, "Abe Martin" did not belong to any particular city; it was announced on February 3, 1905, and the next day it was pictured in a car stacked high with household goods. For twenty-five years, from 1905 to 1930, AbeMartin was the subject of daily mockery in the Indianapolis News, which was syndicated in the United States and Canada along with its affiliated newspaper, the New York Times. The sum of the words should be "Cracky" - a combination of the words "Cracky," "Clucking" and "Chackling" in one sentence.

The reason for this move was that the steep hills and picturesque surroundings were suitable for humorous exaggerations and Hubbard provided the material for his picturesque back story. Gradually, many of Abe's neighbors appeared in pictures and text; the huts at Abe Martin Lodge in the park bear the names of these characters.

Hubbard's cartoons played a significant role in attracting artists and tourists to Brown County and making the area world famous. Hubbard's humor was largely preserved in his heyday from 1905 to 1930, and his cartoons and many of his other works made the park one of the state's most popular tourist attractions.

The Department of Natural Resources built the Abe Martin Lodge and named the hut after its main character in his memory, and erected it on the site of the former Brown County State Park on Weed Patch Hill. AbeMartin Lodge is located in a wooded area on a hill that covers more than 15,000 hectares. It is the largest national park in Indiana, including Weed Patch Hill, with a total area of 2.5 million acres and a population of about 3,500 people.

The rustic dining room makes food a pleasure, and you just can't go away hungry, "Abe Martin said, according to the park's website.

The original 1932 cabins are electrically heated and air conditioned and the units are open from April to November. There are rooms in twenty cabins open year-round, but there are only four cabins in the park, according to the National Park's website.

Closer to Nashville, Indiana, Brown County State Park is the second largest National Park Service park in the United States. Complete your visit with a visit to Blue Ridge Parkway, which is a short drive from the main entrance to the park.
