About Mines of Spain State Park

The village was located near the Julien Dubuque Monument, which now stands at the mouth of Catfish Creek. One of the earliest known inhabitants of this village and one of its most important inhabitants were the Mesquakie Indians.

The Indians traded with French seamen here, and there is evidence that they traded in fur here too.

They also worked for many decades in lead mines dating back to the Revolutionary War. The landscape is characterized by a variety of natural features, such as a stream, a river, an ocean and a mountain range, all within the park.

In 1796, Dubuque received a state grant from the governor of Spain, who was then living in New Orleans. This permit allowed him to work on land owned by Spain and determined that 189 square miles of land should be called Spain's mines. He is credited with being the first European to settle in what is now Iowa in 1788.

Dubuque eventually married the daughter of one of Spain's most influential leaders, Maria de la Cruz. The Civil War caused a renewed lead mining activity, which decreased after the war but continued until 1914. Lead mining is an important part of the history of this area and is still in operation in the state of Iowa.

The Julien Dubuque Monument, built in 1897, is a landmark of Spanish mines and is located on the site, which offers excellent views of the mines and the city of Madrid and the city of Spain.

When Dubuque died, Mesquakie buried him in the place where the monument is now, near the entrance to the mine.

Mines of Spain is a great place for family and corporate picnics; picnics are available. Visitors can enjoy the natural views of the park, explore the many hiking trails, enjoy nature, experience the E.B. Lyons Nature Center and enjoy nature.

A four-kilometer ski slope is maintained by the US Ski and Snowboard Association and the National Park Service. Mines of Spain offers a variety of outdoor activities including hiking, skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling.

Some of the trails are steep and challenging, but other trails offer visitors the opportunity to visit the Spanish mines on old, winding forest trails and enjoy the view from the top of a mountain or from a steep, rocky slope in the mountain forest.

The Mines of Spain State Park is one of the most popular hiking and biking trails in the National Park, with more than 1,000 km of hiking trails.

The E.B. Lyons Interpretation Centre is open all year round and displays, information boards and exhibits inform about the history and features of the park. The Lyon Interpretive Centre serves as an information centre and park office for visitors and houses a wide variety of displays and displays as well as exhibits, information and guided tours. A museum, hiking trails, a picnic area, an amphitheater and a children's playground are just some of the many attractions in the center.

During the summer season, the centre offers a Sunday morning programme, and at other times special programmes can be arranged with the park rangers.

A thick layer of Ordovician dolomite rock was uncovered in the horseshoe-shaped quarries.

Interpretation panels inform about the history of the quarry and its history as well as the current state of the quarry. The area is a popular tourist attraction with a variety of activities for children and adults alike. In addition, the floating path from the main entrance to the mining area and a small path provide access to blind flights.
