About Sam Houston Jones State Park

Originally named after Sam Houston Jones, a Texas folk hero who traveled extensively through western Louisiana, it was named after the 37th governor of the state who played a key role in keeping this piece of land open to the public. The fauna is rich and the managers of this 1087 hectare park are working to preserve the land in its natural state. This unique natural environment is characterized by a large tree - a filled lagoon and a series of waterfalls, as well as a variety of other natural features.

Birds have always been outstanding, and according to the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources, nearly 200 bird species have been observed in the park over the years, with more than 1,000 birds a year. The park is located in a beautiful area with a variety of bird watching areas, such as a large lagoon and a number of waterfalls, as well as several bird watching trails.
