About Fort Custer State Park

Fort Custer covers an area of 1.5 million square miles (3.2 million acres) and covers about 1,000 acres (2,500 hectares). The terrain is typical of farmland in southern Michigan, with secondary forest and residual prairie land. The restoration of the prairie is in progress with excellent results, and the site has been rededicated for recreation and recreation.

Access is possible from Whitford, Lawler and Eagle Lakes, and the area has access to Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, the Great Lakes and Lake Superior. The area was bought by the federal government in the 1930s as part of a plan to build the Fort Custer National Wildlife Refuge, a national park. In 1971, the land was bequeathed to the State of Michigan as a "Legacy Park" by President Nixon and has since been used as a park and recreation area for the state.

This busy trail is 20 km long and is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm and can be reached by bike from the Fort Custer State Park parking lot. The loop of the Red, Green and Yellow Trails is used by cyclists and hikers alike and is extremely popular with athletes and park visitors.
