About McLain State Park

The terrain varies from flat open areas to forests and hills, and Lake Superior has had its share of rain and snow. It attracts visitors from across the state, but also from Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan State and Wisconsin.

Three miles from the shore of Lake Superior, sandy beaches for swimming, combing and windsurfing are surrounded by a sandy beach, swimming ridges and windsurfing.

Two of the park's picnic shelters have fireplaces and three have large barbecues for cooking; reservations are possible at the parks. Some picnic areas also have horseshoe nesting boxes; two of them have a fireplace, one with a large barbecue and the other a small barbecue.

Snowshoeing is also a popular activity in McLain State Park, and the park's location between Calumet and Hancock makes it ideal for visitors visiting the abandoned shafts.

Keweenaw Waterway Lighthouse is located in the park and is one of the area's attractions. From US 41 in Hancock, take Highway M-203 9 miles north to the park entrance and then south to McLain State Park.
