About Judge C R Magney State Park

Peace and solitude of the famous Devil's Cauldron come, and fishermen catch brook and rainbow trout. The most popular hike is to the "Devil's Calendar," where the river is divided by a mass of volcanic rocks. Half of them plunge 50 feet into a pool, while the rest flow through a huge pothole.

The region's climate is tempered by the wide open waters of Lake Superior, so summers are generally cool and winters are usually mild and snow is falling. The park offers a variety of hiking trails, such as the "Teufelskalender" and the Teufelskessel, as well as a number of other hiking trails.

The picturesque Brule River forms the white water of the river's waterfalls, and in the lower sections of this river there are some spectacular waterfalls.

Early fall is the best time to watch peregrine falcons gathering on the shores of Lake Superior. Bird watchers can also find an abundance of warblers along the banks of the River Brule and in the lower parts of this park.

The forest in this area is dominated by birch and aspen, but large white spruce trees adorn the campsites and others at higher altitudes.

In summer, look out for wildflowers that appear in late spring and early summer, and in autumn and winter.

Aster and goldenrod give a special touch to the fiery colours of autumn and the red and green of spring and summer.

The origins of the shores of Lake Superior have a geological history that goes back at least 2.5 million years to the late Pleistocene. In the past, molten lava flowed out of a large fissure that developed in the Earth's crust and then into the ocean.

Long periods of erosion followed, and as the streams dammed, the land sank, forming the large basin that Lake Superior currently occupies. The sedimentary rock of the Great Lakes Basin and its tributaries is estimated to be up to 3500 feet thick.

In Cook County, where the park is located, glacier activity has eroded more than half of the soil deposits. The remains of an ancient mountain range lie just a few hundred metres below the surface of the Great Lakes Basin. As the massive ice sheet dug pools and carved through surface rocks, it also took its toll on land.

The larger animals that populate the park include white deer, elk, elk, coyote, wolf, bear and wolf. The smaller mammals that visitors can see include the black bear, the black-legged wolf and the brown bear with its white fur.

The park has chickens, nuthatches, jays, woodpeckers and capercaillies all year round, and in spring and summer you can listen to the warbler's songs. The main attraction of the park, the C.R. Magney State Park, is a temporary labor camp that the state established there in 1934. This camp provided work and shelter for men who were displaced during the Depression.

In addition to building roads and carrying out public service projects, the men helped fight a fire that burned more than 10,000 hectares of the area in 1935. Later they set up a sawmill and started fighting the fire, which damaged the wood.

The State Park of Bois Brule was designated in 1957 and over the years, plots were added to the park, which now covers a total of 4,674 hectares. In 1963, the park became a state park when the Minnesota Legislature chose it as the site for the first public park on Lake Superior. His influence was a major factor in the creation of Judge C.R. Magney State Park.
