About Split Rock Lighthouse State Park

The park is located on the north shore of Lake Superior and is perhaps best known for its historic lighthouse. The park offers numerous recreational activities, but is best known as the park's historic lighthouse.

Visitors can venture into Split Rock Lighthouse State Park to camp, fish, kayak, hike, rent camping gear and engage in other activities at the pristine campsites.

The rocky beach is perfect for jumping off the rocks into Lake Superior, and the water is warm and clear. Fishermen can cast their catch at Split Rock lighthouse from the shore of the lake or by kayak on the beach.

The winter landscape is spectacular and increases the attractiveness of Split Rock State Park as a destination for hiking, biking and snowshoeing. The trail runs along the shores of Lake Superior, past picturesque waterfalls and winds along a forest path to the lighthouse and lake.

The magnificent cliffs on which the lighthouse was built are the formation of anorthosite. This rock was embedded as a result of ancient lava flows and since then many complex geological processes have occurred over immense periods of time.

The rocks were bent and later compressed by mountain troops, water covered the area and deposited sediments in the rock. The rocks are later bent, compressed and compressed by mountains and forces as well as by erosion of the rocks.

Finally, a series of glaciers scraped the landscape, shearing off the cliffs and shore, shoveling into Lake Superior Basin and shearing off the cliffs along the coast. The meltwater from these glaciers then burrowed into less resistant rocks, dug through the less resistant rock and flowed over the highland rock walls, filling the basin known as Lake Duluth and the other parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Peregrine falcons have been spotted moving north along the coast, and the park's wildlife includes herring gulls and divers. Visitors are also spoilt for choice between birds of prey such as sea lions, coyotes, owls, foxes, raccoons, bears, wolves, elks and wolves.

With its rich and diverse history, Split Rock Lighthouse State Park has proven to be an important part of the state's history and a tourist attraction.

At the mouth of the Split Rock River, the water still protrudes from old quays and dams.

Merrill Ring Lumber felled the most original Norwegian white pines in the area between 1899 and 1906, and the company operated a short train upstream at peak times. In 1905, the Superior Lake, famous for its rich natural resources, claimed a barge pulled by the Edenborn.

The tragic sinking of the ship fuelled the demand for a lighthouse, and a fog signal building for the lighthouse was completed in 1909 and put into operation a year later. The guards at Split Rock warn ships of the treacherous north coast of the rock and warn ships of the treacherous south coast.

In 1971, the federal government transferred the lighthouse station to the state of Minnesota to operate it as a historic site. In 1976, the Minnesota Historical Society (MHS) took over the operation of the site, including the construction of a hotel at the foot of Split Rock and the construction of an observation deck on the east side of Split Rock.
