About Glacial Lakes State Park

Experience the vast open prairie that once dominated Minnesota and stands on picturesque glacier hills. The landscape is covered with wildflowers, prairies and grasses in spring and autumn, and the picturesque glaciers and hills stand out against the background of the blue sky and blue waters of the Great Lakes.

Cyclists and backpackers can camp in the hiking centre or in remote places, but there are also shady and spacious campsites available at the main campsite of the park, with picnic areas overlooking the mountains and the lake.

The park preserves a part of the rare native prairie, including a large area of grassland, as well as a number of native plants and animals. The wolf berry bush is a common prairie shrub that is preserved in the park along with other native species such as wild boar, deer, elk, elk, coyotes, wolves and coyotes. It is located on the west side of Glacier Lake, south of Lake Superior, and preserves the last vestiges of an old, growing forest and a small patch of woodland.

Glacial Lakes State Park is located in a geological area commonly known as the Leaf Hills.

The glacial hills, unparalleled in any other state, stretch from the Detroit lakes to Willmar and beyond. Enjoy the 56 hectare mountain lake, which has a whole watershed in the park, and see the wildflowers that could bloom during your visit.

As the glacier ice advanced south, the steep slopes of the hills were cut into the rock. As the ice receded, it deposited rocks, gravel and dirt that once floated on it, as well as a layer of ice.

Take the prairie forest nature trail and visit the wetlands to see a variety of bird and mammal species. Many species of prairie and woodland birds are native to Glacial Lakes, and many of them nest in the prairies and forests.

Glacial Lakes State Park is home to a variety of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds of prey and other wildlife.

Glacial Lakes was founded in 1974 as a state park to preserve a special form of land, the glacial lake. Located 1.5 km from Glacial Lake, the park is one of the largest state parks in Minnesota, covering a total of 2.1 million hectares. In addition to preserving the natural features of the park, such as glaciers, lakes and lakeways, special landscapes and forms are preserved.
