About Voorhees State Park

Voorhees Parvin State Park was part of Franklin Roosevelt's program to get people back to work during the Depression. The CCC planted trees and erected shelters, picnic areas and paths throughout the park. Two vantage points offer views of the city of Chicago as well as the Chicago River and the Ohio River.

The Depression era, known as the Civil Conservation Corps, working in parks in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. The CCC was one of Roosevelt's leading figures during the Great Depression and a key element of his economic reconstruction program.

The agency has been able to provide jobs to unemployed young men aged 17 to 24 and carry out thousands of conservation projects in parks, forests and historic sites across the country. When the CCC boys arrived in Voorhees in 1933, they found three relatively undeveloped plots in the park.

The park was named by the governor of Vurheses as the first national park in New Jersey and one of the oldest in America.

After the works were completed, they built an important public access point, which is still maintained and used in various ways. The CCC used to have 200 men, although this number was not always maintained.

The CCC camp in Voorhees was originally known as Camp 20 or Camp Vurheses, and the company numbers were consistent with the Army Corps district. Later, with the company 1268, the designation SP-5 was assigned and the SP declared the State Park a national park.

CCC boys were paid $30 a month and $25 was automatically sent home to a family member or guardian for support. Every other week, the boy was paid $2.50 and the other weeks $5.00 and every week $1.25, totaling $6.30.

For many of those enrolled in Voorhees, the CCC offered vocational and vocational courses, as well as a variety of other training opportunities.

Former residents and survivors of Company 1268 are asked to contact the Park Bureau at 908 - 638 - 6969. Voorhees State Park staff will continue to explore opportunities to learn more about the history of the CCC and its role in the Civil War, as well as the history of the park.

To pay tribute to the CCC's 1,268 employees, Voorhees plans to erect a bronze statue of a Confederate soldier and his wife at the entrance to Company Street. The statue would commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Civil War and the foundation of the company 12 68. To learn more about how to participate in these efforts, contact the park office at 908 - 638 - 6969 or the park's website.

There are several picnic areas, tables and barbecues in the park, and for larger groups there are three picnic areas available. Facilities include fireplaces and picnic tables, two bunk beds for up to four people, a wood-burning stove and fireplace, and a picnic table.

Groups of 20 or more must reserve a picnic area at least five days in advance, and areas A, B and C can accommodate up to 100 people. On public holidays, such group use is only permitted with the superintendent's consent.

Reservations for picnic areas are handled by the parking lot office, and Voorhees acts similarly to other New Jersey national parks. All the paths in the park are multi-lane, although the Cross Park Trail is the only one on foot. The path is wide and gravel, but in places rocky and steep, the course is also accessible to people with disabilities.

The observatory was established in 1965 by the Astronomical Association of New Jersey on land leased from the state. The 26-inch Newtonian Reflector Telescope is the largest privately owned telescope in the United States and one of only a handful of such telescopes in North America. In addition, the public is invited to explore the night sky through the Skywatching program offered by the NJAA throughout the year.
