About Sugarite Canyon State Park
To get to Sugarite Canyon State Park, take the I-25 Raton Exit, take NM 526 north for about 3 miles, then follow NM 72 to the NM-72 Exit and take NM-526 to get off. The visitor centre provides information on the history of coal storage in the region and offers a walk through history. Coal mining in the region has given this region and the state an important economic boost.
The Sugarite Canyon State Park, often referred to as Caprock, is the dominant geological feature of the park with a variety of rock formations, such as Sugarite Crater and Giant Craters.
A large layer of molten lava erupted from a nearby volcano, forming Sugarit Crater and Giant Crater, as well as several other rock formations. In Caprock, climbing is allowed, but only on a limited number of trails and only in a narrow section of the park.
