About Pike State Forest

The Pike State Forest consists of 2,939 acres in southwest Indiana and was placed under the administration of Ferdinand State Forest by Pike and State Forest in July 1997. The development of the land that makes up the Pike State Forest began in the 1930s and continued into the 1950s. Most of the buildings on the property were built by the EPA using materials cut from local timber frames.

Most of the reforestation work was carried out in the 1930s by the Civil Defence and the Forest Administration. The acquisition of land for the Pike State Forest began with the aim of returning abused hills, farms, and fire damage to productive forests.

State ownership is divided into 13 separate irregular tracts, which account for the majority of managed recreational facilities and managed and monitored forest resources. The Hecht State Forest now covers an area of 2.2 million hectares and offers a wide range of outdoor recreational opportunities.

The Pike State Forest APV area is adjacent to State Route 124 and the complex covers a total of 1.2 million hectares of woodland. Parking spaces, latrines and new immigrants are available on site and paths provide visitors with access to a variety of trails and a wide range of outdoor recreational opportunities.

The AVP area is open from April 1 to November 30 and the hike is allowed for horse riding. For horse riding there are a number of horse riding trails throughout the forest and you can hike along the Buckeye Trail, which runs through the woods.

Those who want to stay on a well paved path will find numerous county and municipal roads that lead into the forest. Anderson Lake and Dry Bone Road are popular spots offering a quiet seclusion in the hills and trees. Pike State Forest is open to the public for hunting and fishing throughout the year. Fishing is available at several ponds in the woods, and the Pike County Fisheries Department offers fishing licenses for commercial and recreational fishing.

In the forest there are campsites where you can pitch primitive tents for a fee, and primitive campsites that you can get after first coming and going without charge.

In the forest, pits, toilets and seasonal drinking water are available, as well as a variety of other amenities such as a fireplace, picnic tables, picnic table and fireplace.
