About Scioto Trail State Forest

The area, now called the Scioto Trail State Forest, was used as an artillery base at Camp Sherman during World War I. It was built at the mouth of Stoney Creek on the Sciotas River and was shot at during the Battle of the Somme, a major battle in the American War of Independence in 1864.

The purchase of land for the state forest began in 1922 and most of the present forest area was acquired in 1937. The first 9088 hectares cost an average of 7.70 dollars per hectare, the second 9098 hectares 5,000 dollars per hectare.

The forest is named after the Indian Trail, which led from Portsmouth via Portsmouth to today's Chillicothe. Routh, 23, followed the path of the path, which was called the Scioto Path and is still called that.

The area's biggest development occurred in the 1930s, when the Civil Protection Corps built the Scioto Trail, the first of its kind in Ohio.

The forest now covers 9,390 hectares, and the Scioto Trail State Forest has 26 kilometres of hiking trails that cyclists and hikers can take advantage of every day. Mountain bikes are also allowed on the trails, so in summer mountain bike and family camps are held to promote these activities.

A mushroom hunt in spring attracts more visitors to the forest every year, and in autumn, when the leaves become colourful, the picturesque views and the view of the streets attract many visitors. The Scioto Trail State Forest access road system provides easy access to all forest areas and encourages many hunters to pursue their hunting and fishing interests in the area.

Scioto Trail State Park consists of two areas in the middle of the state forest. The park is located on the west side of Scioto Road, just east of Interstate 75, and next to the Forest Service is the fire station and picnic area, which have often been the scene of meetings and family outings.
