About Tar Hollow State Forest

The state forest Tar Hollow was founded in 1930 by the Ross Hocking Land Utilization Project.

The aim of the programme was to move families to more productive land to enable them to earn a better living.

After the project was completed, the land was leased to the forest administration and finally transferred to the state in 1958. Tar Hollow is Ohio's third largest state forest, covering 16,120 acres and home to more than 1,000 acres of wildlife habitat. On the north side of the forest, south of Tar Hill Road, is a 48-sided primitive horse camp.

Electricity and drinking water are not available, but a latrine is available in the camp, and south of the fire station there is a riding path. There is also a horse riding trail to the north, south, east and west of Tar Hill Road and a horse riding footbridge.

The northern half of the forest is accessible from Tar Hill Road, the main road north and south of Tar Hills Road. This provides a great opportunity for scenic rides and allows easy access to areas in and around the forests.
