The Siskiyou area is managed by the three other Red Buttes and includes the northernmost part of the Rogue River National Forest and the southernmost section. The branch is located at the intersection of two major rivers, the Red and Bear Rivers, near the town of Rogue Pass.

The Siskiyou area is located in a small patch of forest that stretches to the north and northwest of California. This part of Klamaths is called Sisksi Mountain and borders to the west the Sierra Nevada and parts of the California Sierra Madre and the Pacific Northwest. In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt established the Siskayou Forest Reserve, and in 1907 it was declared the sisk iyou National Forest.

The name Siskiyou is a reference to the Bob Tail horse, which was given to the Hudson's Bay Company by French-Canadian workers in 1828.
