About Siskiyou National Forest

It covers nearly 1.8 million acres and stretches as far north as Northern California and is located in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Rogue River Drainage District. It was administratively merged in 2004 to form Siskiyou National Forest, the largest national forest in Oregon and the second largest in North America. The forest covers more than 1,800 square kilometers (1,800 square miles) and stretches from the Oregon-Washington border south to the Pacific Ocean, stretching over Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah, Montana, Wyoming, New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, California and Oregon.

The Rogue River Siskiyou National Forest is a botanical treasure trove and is home to more than 2,000 plant and animal species, from wild flowers, shrubs, trees, grasses, flowers, orchids, desert wilderness to breathtaking landscapes. Hundreds of kilometres of hiking trails invite hikers, mountain bikers, snowmobiles in winter and snowmobiles in summer. There are camping, fishing, hiking and mountain biking sites as well as a variety of other activities; rental is seasonal.

The area of the Rogue River National Forest covers 630,000 hectares, distributed over four ranger districts. California has about 53,800 acres, and the site is located in the Siskiyou National Forest, the largest of its kind in California, with a total of 1.2 million acres.

The name Rogue River is in honor of the Takelma Indians, whose defense of their homeland prompted them to call themselves the Coquins or their villains. The forest also includes a nursery at Central Point, and the Rogue River area is home to the Siskiyou National Wildlife Refuge, the largest of its kind in the United States. In 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt founded the Rogue River National Forest, formerly called Crater National Forest.

The Siskiyou National Forest covers 1,094,000 hectares, with five ranger districts spread across the state of California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Washington State. The forest itself is about 2.2 million hectares, of which about 38,000 hectares are in California and the rest in Oregon.

Siskiyou is managed by three other Red Buttes and includes Red Buttes National Forest, Sierra Nevada National Park and Pacific Crest Trail. The branches are located on the north and south sides of the pass as well as in the south and east of California and Oregon.

Siskiyou Forest Reserve was founded in 1905 by President Theodore Roosevelt and declared Sisksi National Forest in 1907. The part of the Klamaths is called Sisciyou Mountains and is located in a small piece of forest that stretches to the north and northwest of California.

The name Siskiyou is a reference to a bob-tail horse, which was donated in 1828 by French and Canadians working for the Hudson's Bay Company.

The Siskiyou area embodies the natural beauty of the Rogue River and its watershed and is characterized by its hives - such as tree and shrub crowns, as well as wild flowers, wild ferns and other native plants. With a special permit you can walk along the river Rogue in Sisksi you National Forest and within its borders, but not within the park itself.

Each facility has its own unique setting and character, and each facility is open to the public for private use only and not for public use at any time of day.

Union Creek Resort, located on the banks of the Upper Rogue River at the mouth of Lake Tahoe in the Siskiyou National Forest, serves as a gateway to many onshore activities and attractions along the Upper Rogue River. The historic resort has been entered in the National Register of Historic Places. Each facility and what it offers at all four locations is very different, from cabins, RV parks, shops and restaurants to cabins, dining rooms and swimming pools.

Fish Lake Resort is located on the main road connecting Medford to Klamath Falls in the picturesque, secluded gorge at the end of the road. The scenic views of Lake Tahoe and Siskiyou National Forest are year-round. Since the 1950s, the church has been a Methodist church and has actively welcomed other groups who can go cycling in summer, snowmobiling in winter and skiing or snowboarding in spring.

A large kitchen and dining room allow the preparation of meals for large groups and small groups of up to six people.

Marial Lodge is located on the north side of the Rogue River, south of Siskiyou National Forest.

Accessible by car, it is also accessible by boat for rafting lovers on the Lower Rogue River Trail.

Those who prefer to be more isolated or want to explore the hinterland can cover most of the forest with scattered hinterland tents. The Rogue River and Siskiyou have set up campsites all over the woods, and for those of you who don't, it's a great place to camp.

In the wilderness, campsites with horse-drawn carts may not adjoin lakes and streams. Scattered camping is permitted in developed recreational areas such as the Rogue River and Siskiyou National Forest.

The Rogue River is the site of the largest annual salmon swim in the Siskiyou National Forest in the Lower 48 states. The Winter Chetco Run brings thousands of anglers into the woods to throw their lines into the water.

Mountain biking is also a very popular sport in the Siskiyou National Forest, with a variety of trails and trails for mountain biking and hiking.

The forest includes over 500 kilometers of hiking trails, and many of these trails are open to riders on motorcycles and mountain bikes. Hundreds of kilometres of undeveloped forest paths offer picturesque views of the Siskiyou National Forest and a wide variety of animal and plant species.
