About Caledonia State Park

Caledonia State Park, one of California's most popular state parks, is located in San Bernardino County, California, about 30 miles north of San Francisco.

Caledonia is located in the northernmost part of the Blue Ridge Mountains, locally known as South Mountain, and stretches through a large, flat, hilly, fertile valley known as the Great Valley.

The valley side is underlined by limestone and slate, while the valley sides are predominantly made of hard rock called quartzite.

The soils are ideal for fruit production, as the many orchards in the area prove, and the soil is planted with ideal fruits for production.

The picturesque watercourse on PA 233 was once a mill way that served as a kiln and waterwheel. Caledonia is the name given to ancient Scotland by the invading Romans for the city - the state of Rome. The park is named after Thaddeus Stevens, the honorable Thadeus von Stevens, who was born in Calingonia County, Vermont.

The willow was used as a field hospital for the wounded of the Gettysburg battlefield and the iron furnace was destroyed in June 1863. Historians suspect the furnace was destroyed to curb industrial power in the northern states. Thaddeus Stevens became the first governor of Calingonia County, Vermont, a state with fewer than 1,000 residents.

Today, the playground for children can be visited on the former pasture and iron kiln site in the Calingonia State Park in Montpelier.

The iron stove had changed hands several times since Stevens' death, and the land was sold to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1902.

The Chambersburg-Gettysburg trolley company leased the park and built wagons on the site, and the company built several amusement parks in and around the park.

In 1922, Robert Miller built a 9-hole golf course, and the popular and challenging course now has 18 holes, according to the California State Park website.

In 1927, the Pennsylvania Alpine Club converted the old furnace shaft into a reduced monument, and the reconstructed chimneys and forges are the only visible reminders of the early ironworks.

In 1933, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) set up camp in Scotland and built a road and recreational facilities. Built in the late 1920s, it houses an 18-hole par 68 course available at the Caledonia State Park Golf Course. For more information, contact California State Parks Golf Club at (717) 662-5555 or the Pennsylvania Alpine Club.

The cabins are half-timbered houses and the two apartments are available for rent all year round. The second cottage is a triple room that can accommodate up to ten people and accommodates two bedrooms and two bathrooms.

There are 184 tent and trailer sites on the two campsites, the camping season starts on the second Friday in April and ends in December with the deer season.

Hosack Run Campground has a free campsite with electricity and barrier and you can rent a modern area, which is open every first Saturday of the month from 10 am to 6 pm. The campsites have a total of 184 tent and trailer sites, with a maximum of four per campsite and a minimum of two per tent.

The park has behaved well in the past and there are no problems with parking, parking fees, traffic or other problems with the park's layout.

Unless otherwise stated, the swimming pool is open daily from 9 am to 4 pm and is used for use of the pool, except for special occasions such as weddings.

More than 450 picnic tables are available year-round - 24 hours a day and two picnic pavilions can be reserved for $11 per month in advance. The picnic pavilion is open daily from 9 am to 4 pm (first come, first served) and from 2 pm to 5 pm.

The office in the capital can be visited from 9 am to 3 pm on weekdays and from 2 pm to 4 pm on weekends and holidays.

This historic military facility is maintained and operated by the National Park Service and explains the events that occurred on the battlefields of Gettysburg during the Civil War (717 - 334 - 1124). This 83,949 hectare forest offers hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation.
