About Colonel Denning State Park

Denning is located in the so-called "Double Gap" of Colonial Denning State Park on the east side of the Colorado River. The park includes Blue Mountain, Gap Vista, Double Gap and Gap Ridge, as well as a number of other features. This peculiarity can be seen from the northern end of the Blue Mountain, where it extends as the base of a steep, steep hill with a narrow gap between the two peaks.

William Denning, a veteran of the American Revolution after whom the park is named, was never a colonel, but he served his country. His wrought iron cannon is still used today as a monument to his service in the Revolutionary War.

William Denning made it from wrought iron laminate with welded-together boom tapes to produce a cannon that was better suited to firing failures than the more common iron cannon of the time. The smithy supplied weapons to the continental army, including cannons, and his son-in-law George Washington was stationed in his house in the park in 1776.

These historical documents help us to imagine what the Dennings "cannons looked like in the early days of the US Civil War and the Revolutionary War, as well as during the war.

William Denning lived his life during the Revolution in Newville, Pa., and is buried in his home state of Pennsylvania. When you add colonel to colonel, you don't know much more about the history of the Dennings family, let alone their group history.

The history of the Dennings family goes back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, but not to the end of the revolution.

In the 1930s, the park became a state recreation area under the Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry and a recreation area for the state. In the summer season, a visitor centre is open, where plants, animals and minerals from the parks are exhibited and environmental interpreters are provided. There are 52 pitches, tents and caravans, with a total of 1,000 hectares of open space open to the public. The park was opened in 1924 as the first national park in Pennsylvania and the second in Delaware County.

Each pitch has a picnic table and a fireplace and is close to a toilet, dishwasher and a landfill. The sandy beach is open, but swimming at your own risk and swimming pools are not open in the summer months for safety reasons.

The snack bar on the beach is open during the summer season, but closed in the winter months for safety reasons and only open during peak hours.

There are two picnic pavilions that can be reserved for $11 per month in advance, and there is an unreserved picnic pavilion. The wooded park has a picnic area with picnic tables, picnic chairs and picnic benches. Playground equipment is available in picnic areas 1, 2 and 3 and playground equipment on the beach. First come, first served, free parking and free entry to the park during peak hours.

The self-guided Double Gap Trail (1.5 miles) is an easy hike to the top of the mountain, the highest point in the park and the summit of Mt. Davenport Mountain.

In addition to the 18 km of hiking trails, the park is signposted for the 105 km Tuscarora Trail. Nature trail guides are available at the Park Office and contain information about the Tuscarsora trail and the surrounding woodland.

Carlisle, Harrisburg, Gettysburg, York and Chambersburg are all within an hour's drive and can be reached via major roads. The terrain is slightly hilly and mountainous and there is a wide variety of terrain, such as snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Skiing is not allowed in this park, as there are no existing roads or paths in the area and no snowmobiling trails.
