About Lake Bob Sandlin State Park

Lake Bob Sandlin State Park is a 639.8-acre park on the heavily wooded coast of the Gulf of Mexico in East Texas. It was acquired in 1979 and opened in 1987 by the Texas Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The prehistoric Caddaeans occupied East Texas from 200 BC to 1700, and there is evidence that the French and Spanish occupied the area periodically and established relations with the C. Addo.

The Choctaw, Cherokee and Kickapoo moved to East Texas in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Fort Sherman was built in 1841, which is believed to be within the park, as is the U.S. Army base at Lake Bob Sandlin.

Fort Sherman Cemetery is located within the park and the land has been used for agriculture and livestock since the 1860s, according to the Texas Historical Commission.

It produces spectacular autumn colours and popular fish are perch, catfish and crayfish. Nearby attractions include Lake Bob Sandlin State Park, the Texas Museum of Natural History and Fort Sherman Cemetery. The park is one of the largest national parks in Texas and the second largest in the United States.

Walk approximately 10 miles from the park entrance, turn left onto Highway 21 and walk approximately 10 miles to Lake Bob Sandlin State Park, about one mile south of Fort Sherman.
