About Gunlock State Park

The 240-acre Gunlock Reservoir, which attracts visitors, is located in the center of State Park, home to Gunlock State Park. The complex includes a boat dock and forecourt, as well as a picnic area with picnic tables, picnic benches and picnic areas.
The name "Gunlock" is a nod to John Hamblin, an Ohio-born Mormon pioneer who settled in what is now the Lake District in 1857. Gunlock Will was a good hunter and sniper and skillfully repaired rifle locks that served as a firing mechanism for muzzle loaders.

His brother Jacob Hamblin is actually the better known of the two, and there are still Paiute Indians in the area. The county road through the park is an old Spanish road used by the goldfields that became the destination in 1849 until the choice of the short route. A number of campsites follow the river from its beginning to the end of this road. Ponderosa pines line the sparkling blue lake and the lake itself is lined with sparkling blue lakes.

In the 1970s, Gunlock Dam was built by the US Army Corps of Engineers and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) for irrigation and flood control.
