About Caledon State Park

Caledon is a designated National Natural Monument and offers visitors the opportunity to observe bald eagles in their natural habitat. The preservation of the habitat for native birds is at the heart of this natural environment. Over 60 eagles have been spotted in and around Caledon in recent years, most of them in the past two years.

Visitors can enjoy the beauty of Caledonian nature on a walk or picnic in the mature forest, or guests of the park can learn more about the birds and their natural habitat by visiting the Visitor Centre. A limited tour of the Eagle area is offered by the National Park Service and California's Department of Natural Resources. The trails in Eagle Reserve are closed in the winter months to give the young birds time to perfect their hunting and fishing skills.

The Caledon Natural Area is located in the former colonial residence of the Alexander family. John Philip Alexander founded the city of Alexandria and founded Calingon Plantation in 1659. In the mid-19th century William A. Smoot inherited the estate from the Alexander family and at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century the State Park was founded.

Mrs. Ann Hopewell Smoot gave Caledon to the Commonwealth in honor of her late husband Lewis E. Smoot, who died in 1962.

After the importance of Caledonian summer eagle populations was determined, Governor Charles S. Robb established a "Caledon Task Force" to develop a management plan for the area. The task force successfully established a no-fly zone along the Potomac River near Calingon. Other recommendations included continuing eagle research, developing educational trails and limiting the use of boats on the riverbank and other public land within the boundaries of the park.

Guided hunting takes place annually in November, and those who have a muzzle must qualify for participation by proving a safety course for hunters and shooting only one muzzle - only.

The accommodation is located 50 meters from the parking lot and can accommodate up to 40 people and is suitable for disabled people. The shelter has a toilet and visitor center nearby, and a picnic hut in the park is rented out at a rate of $5 per person per day or $10 for the whole year.

Then the cancellation fee applies for the first two days of the day and the last day of your stay in the park for a total of 10 days.

The five trails in the reserve are open year-round and lead visitors to a variety of wildlife habitats including the Potomac River, Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The trail is open all year round without the traffic disturbing the summer population of nesting and eating eagles. The most popular hiking trails include those that lead to and from the Potomac. A junior ranger hike at night, guided hikes and craft activities are to be paid for as well as tent and tent permits.
