About Governor Knowles State Forest
The forest covers 19,343 hectares (36,443 acres), which are currently under government ownership, and is one of the largest state forests in the United States and the second largest in North America. He was reappointed governor of the Knowles State Forest and praised former Governor Warren P. Knowle for his administration and progress in conservation. Founded in 1884 under former President John F. Kennedy, the forest serves as a model for the conservation and management of Massachusetts public lands and natural resources.
St. Croix, which leads canoeists through a wild and scenic landscape and is able to overlook geological formations left behind by two ice ages.
The wildlife is a focus for hunters and visitors, and hunters are found throughout the forest. For visitors who are more interested in wildlife observation, the varied forest habitat offers the opportunity to see a variety of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds of prey and other wildlife.
