About Interstate State Park

The forests of the St. Croix River Valley are shining in new splendor and spring brings a great variety of wildflowers, but there is so much to do. Visitors can walk the cliffs along the St. Croix and Dalles, watch kayakers whizzing through the rapids and relax on tour boats.

The geology that has shaped the park has fascinated visitors and brought geologists from all over the world together. Glaciers and holes are explored, making this park unique, and the geological history of the St. Croix and Dalles River Valley is visible in all parks.

In the 19th century, the threat of mining along the St. Croix and Dalles led Minnesota and Wisconsin leaders to preserve the D into their respective states, and together they founded the Minnesota State Park System and the Wisconsin State Parks System. The Minnesota Legislature established the park in 1895, and in 1900 the Wisconsin Legislature followed suit. Visitors can visit both sides of the St. Croix River for spectacular views of the Minnesota State Park system and the river itself.

The park is home to many rare and endangered species, and as a small but heavily visited area, Interstate is a paradise for unique species. The landscape of the parks is diverse and includes a variety of flora and fauna as well as wildlife such as birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds of prey.

Historically, a small garden was created in a pothole area at the beginning of the 20th century, but it has since been restored so that visitors can use it.

This is a hardened basalt rock lava flow, which is therefore covered with volcanic ash and lava flows and other volcanic material. In the autumn of the 19th century, an earthquake broke out in the area, which was caused by a volcanic eruption of Mount St. Helens.

In addition to the sedimentary rock formations found in the park, traces of an ancient sea can also be found. These rocks contain the remains of waves carved into stone by the now-disappeared sea. Indeed, many different St. Croix Valleys have been begged over the years, and the state has been washed away by both advancing and retreating seas.

The original one originated about 70 million years ago, and the last one that exists today originated about 10,000 years ago.

The last glacier was the now-extinct Glacial Lake Grantsburg, which is now extinct, about 1,000 miles south of Interstate State Park.

Today, Glacial Lake Duluth is much larger than Lake Superior, and huge masses of ice and meltwater rush south, cutting through the vast valleys of St. Croix. Only very resistant basalt remains, which partly defies the torrents that lead to the potholes and cliffs of the Dalle.

The park is home to many bird species, such as owls, squirrels, birds of prey and bats.

There are many places in the park where you can hear the chirping of birds and the calls of owls, as well as a great variety of other wildlife. The park, with its many lakes and streams and springs that flow into the St. Croix River, is supported by an extensive network of hiking trails, trails for horse riding, hiking, cycling, canoeing, kayaking, snowshoeing and snowmobiling.
