About New Glarus Woods State Park

New Glarus Woods is a 411-acre state park that offers camping, hiking, picnicking and snowshoeing. The park also offers 265 hectares of limestone - asphalt paths, ideal in some areas for cycling, hiking, snowmobiling and hunting, as well as trails for mountain bikers.

Guests can enjoy hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, camping and picnics in the New Glarus Forest and the surrounding area.

Three areas in the European settlement have been restored to their original state and a programme of incineration, mowing and sowing is being used to restore them. The project has started with the restoration of two areas of the New Glarus Forest in the north - west - with a large part of it being used again. If you are interested in helping with this restoration, please contact the park staff.

During the week and at weekends there are fun and educational programs, and in the summer months a variety of activities for children and adults.

The Junior Ranger and Wisconsin Explorer programs are free brochures with activities that children and parents must complete to receive a certificate in colorful plaster. The brochure can be requested at the parking office, or you can get information at the parking office on the bulletin board in case you have forgotten your timetable. This takes place either in the Chattermark Amphitheater or in the shelter.

The Ice Age Trail winds through the state's last glaciers, and the Sugar River State Trail is a 2.5-kilometer cross-country trail that connects two of the main routes in New Glarus Woods State Park. It is open to the public and passes through a number of different areas of the park, including the Chattermark Amphitheater, the Big River Trail and other hiking trails in the area.

This is a 2.5 kilometer cross country trail from the Big River Trail to the Chattermark Amphitheater, which is 1,500 feet above sea level and has a total elevation difference of 3,000 feet.
