About William B Bankhead National Forest
The National Forests in Alabama began when the National Forest Commission established the Alabama Purchase Unit in 1914. The first forests were in Franklin, Lawrence and Winston counties, and on January 15, 1918, President Woodrow Wilson declared the area Alabama National Forest.
The primeval forests must have been deep in the canyons of public land, and land acquisition records show that at least 1,500 hectares of forest land were cleared, managed and cleared to build a new road, highway, roads, bridges and other infrastructure.
On June 19, 1936, the Alabama National Forest was renamed Black Warrior National Forest by President Franklin D. Roosevelt's proclamation. A Congressional Act changed the name to William B. Bankhead National Forest on June 22, 1937 and again to William B. Bankhead National Forest on July 1, 1939.
Bankhead National Forest has several scenic campsites, including the newly renovated Corinth and Clear Creek campgrounds. The three campsites are open from April to October and each unit has electricity and water connections. The newly expanded network of paths from Bankhead and recreation areas will extend the existing 71 km of forest by 82 km of leisure trails.
